Santiago to pitch in FCBL All-Star Game

Mitchell College senior Eddie Santiago, the ex-New London High School star, has been selected to play in Tuesday's Future Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game at Muzzy Field in Bristol.

Santiago, who is playing summer ball for the FCBL's Wachusett Dirt Dawgs, was one of 10 pitchers selected to represent the West squad.

Santiago began the summer in the bullpen but has successfully made the switch to the starting rotation. Since the change, the lefty has lowered his earned run average from 2.79 to 2.13. He is 3-1 with one save, six walks and 23 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.

He is also 2-0 in his last four outings with a 1.78 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 15.2 innings.

“It's an honor, especially competing at a high level like this,” Santiago said in a release. “Coming from a small Division III school, I don't think anyone expected me to do as well as I have. The competition here is great. I'm facing guys from schools like Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, LSU and UConn.”

Schooners blank Wave

• The Mystic Schooners rode a dominating night of pitching to beat first-place Ocean State 3-0 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Sonny Potter allowed only four hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out eight, while Mike Appel struck out the side in the eighth and Logan Lessard did the same in the ninth for the Schooners (16-15). Chris Winkel had an RBI double in a two-run fourth for Mystic. Ocean State is 22-8.

• Eric Nicholson allowed three hits over five innings and struck out eight as the Panera Pirates defeated Three Rivers 13-0. Sean Connelly had two hits, one RBI and scored three runs for the Pirates while Cody Jones had a triple, single and two runs, and C.J. Moore and Steve Sieczkowski each had a hit and scored three runs.

Rain suspends Tigers' game

• Rain and lightning suspended the New York-Penn League game between the Connecticut Tigers and TriCity ValleyCats in Troy, N.Y. The Tigers led 1-0 in the top of the second and the game will be continued on Tuesday at 5 p.m., followed by the regularly-scheduled game.

State LL (11-12) softball

• Waterford will play Westport in the championship round of the Connecticut Little League (11-12) softball tournament at Elm Ridge Park in Rocky Hill today at 6 p.m. Westport defeated Shelton 4-1 in an elimination game and must beat unbeaten Waterford twice to advance to the Eastern Regionals starting Saturday in Bristol. Should Westport force a deciding game, it will be played Wednesday at 6 p.m.

State Section 3 (10-11) baseball

• East Lyme was eliminated from the Connecticut Section 3 Little League (10-11) tournament, losing to Middletown 3-2 in Cromwell. Alex Dreyfus went 3-for-3 and Quinn Killoy doubled for the District 10 champions while Connor Tukey pitched well in defeated, allowing only three hits in five innings while striking out four.

• Glastonbury defeated East Lyme 6-1 on Sunday in the first game of the round robin tourney. Peter Sherwood had two hits for East Lyme, Killoy drove in the East Lyme run scoring Dreyhus, who pitched four innings and allowed six hits with seven strikeouts.

Sutera (11-12) tournament

• Rhodia Perry pitched a one-hitter has New London defeated Groton 8-0. Zion Frazer hit two home runs, Greg Santora homered and Jesus Sanchez hit a double to pace New London.

• Owen Elmer allowed one hit and struck out 12 as East Lyme defeated Salem/Bozrah 7-0. Elmer, Ethan Moore and Joel Collado all had extra base hits while Tucker Zeeman had Salem/Bozrah's lone hit.

Jaden Reyes hit two home runs as Old Lyme defeated Waterford 17-7. Chad Coughlin and Santiago Rodriguez had two RBI each for Old Lyme while Nicholas Pisano hit a home run and double and Jose Vega, Devon Powers and Jeffrey Fabian all had doubles for Waterford.

• Mystic outlasted Ledyard 13-12. Mystic had home runs from Ethan Mireault (three hits), Dylan Meyer and Jason Hartmann, Jose Rodriquez had two hits, including a triple, and Sean Porter and Luke Noreika each had two hits. Brayden Wuestner, Sam Almeida and Robert Moynihan hit home runs for Ledyard.

Sutera (9-10) tournament

• Waterford Red defeated Montville 10-7 as winning pitcher Matthew Shampine had four strikeouts in three innings, Josh Bergstrom had four hits, including a double, Nick Ingraham had three hits, including a double, and Danny Girard added a double. Jack Treat had three hits (one a double) for Montville while Luke Chapman and Cole Chiasson added two hits apiece.

• Groton defeated Salem/ Bozrah 11-3 as Dom Zuliani had three hits, Eammon Pelletier had a single and triple and Jaxyn Beaudet had a double. Shane LeMay had two hits for Salem/Bozrah.

• Waterford Blue defeated New London 11-6 behind winning pitcher Lucas Saunders' five strikeouts, Remy Coderre's two hits and a Cooper Sheehan double. Desmond Powers had a hit and RBI for New London.

Three Wolves honored

• New England Black Wolves forward Kevin Crowley, transition player Jay Thorimbert and defender Joel Coyle were honored by the National Lacrosse League. Crowley and Thorimbert were named to the All-Pro second team while Coyle made the All-Rookie team. Crowley set a single-season record for goals with 45, Thorimbert led the NLL with 302 faceoff wins and 192 loose balls.
