Waterford wins opener in East Regional LL softball tourney

Bristol — Waterford put on a dominating performanc­e in its opening game at the East Regional Little League 11-12-yearold softball tournament.

Maddie Burrows pitched a two-hitter and Waterford erupted for 10 hits in just three innings en route to a 130 victory over Worcester (Mass.) on Saturday. The game was halted after just 3.5 innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Connecticu­t champions advance to the winners' bracket of the double-eliminatio­n tournament against Delmar (Md.) on Sunday at 11 a.m. Delmar had a first-round bye.

Anna Dziecinny's two-run double highlighte­d a three-run first inning and Milly Walker's bases-loaded triple keyed a sixth-run second that extended Waterford's lead to 9-0 and broke the game open.

Walker finished with two hits, four RBI and two runs scored while Dziecinny added two hits and three RBI. Adrianna Donahue added a tworun double with two runs while Lily Marelli and Burrows scored three runs apiece.

Burrows walked only one batter and struck out four.

NE Babe Ruth (14)

• Dan Driscoll allowed one hit over five innings with six strikeouts to earn the victory as Waterford beat Vermont champion Brattlebor­o 11-0 to improve to 1-1 in the New England Regional tournament at Trumbull. Waterford wraps up pool play against Pittsfield (Mass.) Sunday at 4 p.m. All eight teams advance to Monday's quarterfin­als. Ryan Bakken had two hits and scored three times, Trey Brennan doubled and scored and Trevor D'Amico scored twice for Waterford.

State American Legion

• Waterford lost to South Windsor 4-0 in the Bristol Regional at Muzzy Field. Collin Bakken took the loss, allowing seven hits and four runs (one earned) over 6.2 innings. Bakken struck out five with one walk and was hurt by four errors behind him. Alex Petchark singled and doubled and Bakken had a double for Waterford, which plays in an eliminatio­n game against Avon on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Tigers win

• The Connecticu­t Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on to beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 2-1 in a New YorkPenn League game. Jordan Pearce's RBI double accounted for the first run and Reynaldo Rivera added a sacrifice fly for the Tigers (15-14). Ryan Castellano­s (3-2) earned the win, allowing seven hits and one unearend run over six innings. He struck out four and walked two. Will Vest pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Eight Schooners named all-stars

• Eight players from the Mystic Schooners were selected to play for the South Division team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game on July 30 at North Adams, Mass. Second baseman Nick Mascelli (Wagner) and outfielder Tommy Jew (UC Santa Barbara) were named as starters. Pitchers Kevin Chandler (UC Santa Barbara) and Brent Teller (Sacred Heart) made the team. Reserves selected were catcher Kaleb Foster (Nevada), third baseman John Trousdale (Alabama) and outfielder­s Andruw Gazzola (Stony Brook) and Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall).

Local scholarshi­p winners

• Two local organizati­ons recently awarded 2017 scholarshi­ps to deserving graduating high school student-athletes.

The Coach Richard Beams Scholarshi­p, honoring the legacy of the popular assistant coach, awarded $500 scholarshi­ps to: Kyle Derosier (Killingly football), Katarina Devolve (Plainfield softball), D. Major Roman (New London football) and Dahyir Croft (New London softball).

The Christophe­r Potvin Scholarshi­p, establishe­d in 1987 to honor the memory of a young athlete who died in car accident, awarded $1,000 scholarshi­ps to: Patrick Caron (Montville), Mackenzie Burke (NFA), Julia Morrison (Old Lyme), Alex Petchark (Waterford), Tyler Yeomans (Waterford), Bryan Guetens (St. Bernard), Jayden Delaporta (Fitch), Mia Brennan (Waterford), Edie Parungao (Ledyard), Matt Planchon (Stonington), Reagan Masson (East Lyme), Noah Cook (Montville), Baylee Brackett (Waterford), Alison Christense­n (East Lyme), Collin Singleton (Woodstock), Austin Malchiodi (St. Bernard), Graham Aird (Old Lyme), Caleigh O'Neil (Old Lyme), Allynna Grills (Marin Science Magnet), Connor McCrea (Fitch), Taya Gollsneide­r (Norwich Tech), Christophe­r Bouchard (Montville), Claudia Jackson (Ledyard).

State Section 3 LL (9-10)

• East Lyme beat Wethersfie­ld 6-3 on Friday night, but was eliminated from play on a tiebreaker. A.J. Montejano had two hits for East Lyme and Jack Hayes earned the win with three shutout innings.

Sutera tournament (11-12)

• Dylan Meyer homered as Mystic beat Lyme/Old Lyme 10-5 on Friday. Jason Hartman, Charlie MacPherson and Mikey Wager had doubles for Mystic. Jaden Reyes homered twice and John Coffey had a double for Lyme/Old Lyme.

Sutera tournament (9-10)

• Mystic beat Waterford Blue 7-2 on Friday. Pitchers Griffin Pollard and Hayden Chappel combined for nine strikeouts and Tomas Rogers had two hits for Mystic. Reliever Cooper Sheehan allowed one run in three innings for Waterford. Mystic also beat Waterford Red 16-3. Jonah Korenick had three hits for Mystic and Matt Shampine had two hits for Waterford. And, winning pitcher Trace Morales struck out eight as Mystic beat New London 10-1. Isaac Lopez had New London's only hit.

• Groton beat Waterford Red 8-5 on Friday as winning pitcher Eammon Pelletier struck out six. Jayden Carter, Dom Zuliani, Jaxyn Beaudet and Pelletier had two hits each for Groton. Danny Girard singled, doubled and tripled and Cane Robinson had two hits for Waterford.

• Waterford Blue beat New London 6-4 on Friday. Evan Bouges doubled, Remy Coderee had two hits and Lucas Saunders struck out six for Waterford. New London's Cayden Simonds-Gaskin tripled.
