NL transfer station trip an eye-opener

-

On July 3, I had the opportunity to utilize the New London transfer station, a less-than-stellar experience. A day or two prior, I looked up the transfer station hours of operation. I read that it opens at 7:30 a.m. on a Monday. I arrived at 7:15 a.m. to await the opening. What happened next is one of the many reasons we spend far too much on services here in New London.

I observed employees arriving at a regular rate, then I looked at my watch. It was 7:30 a.m. and the gate was not open yet. Finally the gate was opened at 7:50 a.m. I pulled onto the scale with the love seat I had to dispose of. Nobody was in the scale house. I walked around the truck for a while, having a cigar. Finally, at 8 a.m., someone arrived to take my $5 so I could dispose of the item. The fee for the bulky item is not enough. Eleven years ago, in a different community, we charged $10 per bulky item. That municipality now charges $20.

The entire narrative shows just how much taxpayer money we waste in New London on an hourly basis. Privatize trash removal. We will save money and get much better service. Keith J. Robbins New London
