Potter no-hits New Bedford as Schooners win sixth straight

Waterford youth baseball and softball teams get the day off due to rain

Groton — Sonny Potter, who pitched seven scoreless innings in his previous start, pulled off another masterpiec­e on Monday night when he pitched a no-hitter to lift the Mystic Schooners to a 6-0 victory over the New Bedford Bay Sox in the New England Collegiate Baseball League at Fitch High School.

It was the sixth straight win for the Schooners (23-16), who have won nine of their last 10.

Potter, a 6-foot-2 lefty from Alabama, walked three and struck out four.

Philip Wagner (Wagner) led the offense with three hits while Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) added two hits, including an RBI single, Matt O'Neill (Penn) added an RBI double and Tommy Jew (Cal Santa Barbara) had a pair of sacrifice flies.

• Five Mystic players will take part in Game Skills Competitio­n and Talent Showcase during the NECBL AllStar Game on Sunday at North Adams (Mass.).

Ryan Solomon (Northeaste­rn) will take part in the home run derby, Jew and Nick Mascelli (Wagner) will take part in a 60-yard dash competitio­n, and pitchers Logan Lessard (Bryant) and Kellen Croce (New Haven) will take part in the talent showcase, which will include a bullpen session that will be viewed by scouts from all 30 Major League Baseball teams.

• Lessard and Potter were named to the Week 7 NECBL honor roll. Lessard recorded a pair of saves for the Schooners, striking out six of the seven batters he faced without allowing a hit, while Potter pitched seven scoreless innings in his only start, scattering four hits while walking one and striking out eight.

Youth baseball, softball

• Waterford's pursuit of regional youth baseball and softball championsh­ip was put on hold by rain throughout. Waterford's 14-year-old Babe Ruth baseball team had its quarterfin­al game in the New England tournament pushed back until Tuesday at 1 p.m., while Waterford's 11-12 Little League softball team had its winners' bracket game in the East Regional tournament moved to Tuesday at 10 a.m.

The Babe Ruth team, which went 2-1 in pool play, will play Keene (N.H.) at Trumbull High School for a spot in the semifinals on Wednesday, while the Little League team, which has won its first two games by mercy rule, plays Robbinsvil­le (N.J.) at the Bart Giamatti Little League Training Center in Bristol.

It will be the first of two games for Waterford's Little League team in the revamped schedule. If Waterford wins, it comes back at 8 p.m. to play either Biddeford (Me.) or Newark (Del.) in the winners' bracket final for a spot in Thursday's championsh­ip round. If Waterford loses, it will come back and play an eliminatio­n game against Morrisvill­e (Pa.) at 3 p.m.

Renegades beat Tigers

• The Hudson Valley Renegades scored all of their runs in the fifth inning to beat the Connecticu­t Tigers 5-3 in a New York-Penn League game at Duchess Stadium in Wappinger Falls, N.Y.

Colby Bortles (2-for-4) had a tworun single in the eighth for the Tigers (15-15) while Garrett McCain added an RBI single in the ninth.

Local auto racing

• New London-Waterford Speedbowl general manager George Whitney announced that the Exit Realty Modified Tour Series has agreed to return to the Speedbowl for the season finale on Oct. 22. Whitney and Exit Realty owner Gary Knight said the touring series will crown its 2017 champion in the 125-lap "Sunoco Quest for the Cup." The overall series champion will receive $10,000 while the race winner that day will earn $5,000.
