Ledyard — George W. Weller III of Ledyard passed away suddenly and peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

He was born in Norwich on June 30, 1925, the son of the late George W. Weller Jr. and Anna Krauss Weller of Lisbon. George graduated from Norwich Free Academy and Bryant College before serving in the Army Air Corps as a pilot during World War II. Later, while raising a family in Demarest, N.J., he enjoyed a long, 30-year career, retiring as captain for Eastern Airlines. He was also a longtime resident of Groton Long Point, where he enjoyed many years boating and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth “Betty”; a daughter, Mary Anne Carlin of Norwalk; a son, John C. Weller of Baton Rouge, La.; a grandson, Ryan P. Carlin of New York City; a sister, Doris Quarles of Eastham, Mass.; nieces and a nephew.

George was an active member of St. David’s Episcopal Church, the Eastern Airlines Retired Pilots Associatio­n, Ledyard Sportsmans’ Club and his beloved Ducks Unlimited.

A celebratio­n of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Gales Ferry with a reception following.

An avid outdoorsma­n and nature lover, George was particular­ly passionate about the wetlands and waterfowl habitat conservati­on efforts of Ducks Unlimited. Donations may be made to Ducks Unlimited, 568 Greenhaven Road, Pawcatuck, CT 06379.
