Groton — Garet Griffin's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth scored Philip Capra to give the Mystic Schooners a 4-3 victory over the Danbury Westerners on Friday night in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch High School.

Earlier in the day, Mystic (2617) had its eight-game winning streak snapped when it lost a makeup game to the Newport Gulls 7-0.

Capra (Wagner) opened the ninth by reaching on an error. He was sacrificed to second by Chris Winkel (UConn) before Griffin (Mitchell) delivered the game-winner one out later.

Griffin (2-for-4) also played a key role when the Schooners tied the game in the eighth. Trailing 3-2, Griffin singled, moved to second on base hit by Andruw Gazzola (Stony Brook) and scored on a base hit by Tommy Jew (UC Santa Barbara).

Gazzola went 3-for-3 in the second game and Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) hit a solo home run, his third of the season.

The Schooners are off this weekend for the NECBL All-Star Game and close their regular season on Tuesday at home against North Adams at 6 p.m.

Tigers win

• Jordan Pearce's two-run home run highlighte­d a threerun third inning as the Connecticu­t Tigers edged the Vermont Lake Monsters 3-2 for their third straight win in a New York-Penn League game played before 3,689 at Dodd Stadium.

Luke Burch and Garrett McCain both singled and scored for the Tigers (18-16) and Ryan Castellano­s scattered eight hits over 5.1 innings with two earned runs to get the win.

Logan Farrar went 3-for-4, including a double, with a run and an RBI for Vermont (20-17).
