Vazquez hits 3-run homer in ninth as Red Sox beat Indians, move into first
Boston — Christian Vazquez hit a dramatic three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to rally the Boston Red Sox to a 12-10 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
The victory, coupled with Detroit's 4-3 win over the Yankees, lifted the Red Sox back into first place in the American League East.
Rafael Devers began the comeback with a single and Mitch Moreland struck out with two outs but reached first base on a wild pitch by Cleveland closer Cody Allen. Both runners advanced on another wild pitch before Vazquez ended the game with a blast to center.
The Red Sox took a 9-8 lead into the ninth, but closer Craig Kimbrel surrendeered a leadoff homer to the Indians' Francisco Lindor that tied the game.
Boston's newest acquistion, reliever Addison Reed, also allowed a solo homer to Carlos Santana leading off the eighth.
The Red Sox rallied from early 5-0 and 7-5 deficits to take a 9-7 lead in the sixth on a bases-clearing double by Edwardo Nunez.
• Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was been placed on the 10day disabled list with inflammation in his left knee.
Boston made the move before Tuwesday night's game.
Pedroia, who leads the Red Sox with a .307 batting average, is on the DL for the second time this season. He missed nine games in early June with a sprained left wrist.
