Barbara Goodwin
Groton — Barbara Fouhey Goodwin, 92, of Groton, died peacefully on July 26, 2017, at the Apple Rehab Center in Mystic. She was born in Boston, the daughter of Janet Dickson Fouhey and John H. Fouhey, and moved to Groton as a child. A 1943 graduate of R.E. Fitch High School, she married high school sweetheart, Charles Lewis Goodwin of Groton, in 1945.
Mrs. Goodwin is preceded in death by her husband Charles, in 1992, and her sister, Lillian Fouhey Downie, in 1985. She is survived by son, Alan Goodwin and his wife, Darlena, of Mooresville, N.C.; son, Chuck Goodwin and his wife, Deirdre, of Old Lyme; and by two granddaughters, Phoebe Goodwin of Somerville, Mass., and Molly Goodwin of Los Angeles, Calif.
Mrs. Goodwin retired in 1985 as a designer from Electric Boat, where her pink hardhat helped distinguish her from her mostly male co-workers. In retirement, she volunteered in the Lobby Shop at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and was a member of its auxiliary, the LAMBS. Barbara was also an active member of Groton Congregational Church and its Women’s Fellowship.
An avid and knowledgeable birder, she was never far from her prized binoculars. Bird watching, combined with her love of travel, took her around the country and the world, including Hawaii, Alaska, Australia, Belize, and Iceland. More recently she toured Ireland with her son, Chuck. She was also an enthusiastic golfer and duckpin bowler, activities she continued to enjoy well into her late 80s.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, at Groton Congregational Church, 162 Monument St., Groton. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Barbara’s name may be made to the Restoration Fund of the Groton Congregational Church.
