Beer is the focus of events in New London and New Haven
The Hempsted Houses in New London will host Scott Vallely of Charter Oak Brewing, the newest brewery in Connecticut, at 6 p.m. Aug. 18. He will talk about the history of beer and related subjects. Attendees can also sample some brews and talk to Vallely about beer. Tickets are $25, $20 for Connecticut Landmarks members. Space is limited, and reservations are required. Meanwhile, this Saturday, several breweries from southeastern Connecticut will be part of the Craft Brew Races at Edgewood Park in New Haven. The series, which consists of a 5K run followed by a beer festival featuring both local and regional breweries, makes its final stop of the 2017 season in Connecticut. The run starts at noon, with the festival doors opening at 12:30 p.m. All 5K participants and festival-goers receive a souvenir pint glass and entry to the festival. All designated driver ticket-holders receive a different bracelet at registration and can partake of the festival, designated snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Participating breweries include The Beer'd Brewing Company of Stonington, 30 Mile Brewing Co. of Old Saybrook, These Guys Brewing of Norwich, and Cottrell Brewing Company of Pawcatuck. The cost for the 5K and beer fest together is $60 in advance, $65 on Saturday; $50 and $55 for 5K and designated driver; $50 and $55 for festival only; and $15, $25 for designated driver.
