Connecticu­t Tigers lose to Staten Island Yankees

Norwich — The Staten Island Yankees scored seven runs in the top of third inning and held on to beat the Connecticu­t Tigers 8-5 in a New YorkPenn League baseball game on Sunday at Dodd Stadium.

The Tigers (21-22) got a run back in the bottom of the third on Dylan Rosa's sacrifice fly and closed in to 7-4 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Teddy Hoffman and a two-run single by Jordan Pearce. Each team scored a run in the eighth.

Joey Morgan singled, doubled and scored twice and Cole Peterson and Hoffman had two hits each for the Tigers. Jose Polonia went 3-for-4 for the Yankees (27-19).

Potvin tournament (19U)

• The CT Crush won the Christophe­r Potvin Memorial tournament for the fourth straight year, beating the Ct Blue Jays 10-0 in the title game. Doug Delacruz of the Crush was the MVP, going 7-for-14 with three doubles, two triples and four RBI in four games. In the final, Buddy Dewaine singled, doubled and drove in three runs, Delacruz doubled, tripled and drove in two runs and Isiah Mack had a three-run triple for the Crush. Andy Grant was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits in four innings with seven strikeouts.

On Saturday, the Crush beat the CT Blue Jays 3-2 and the CT Clippers 3-1. Delacruz had a single, two doubles and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning aganst the Blue Jays. Jordan Warecke started and allowed three hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. Anthony Viteritto singled and doubled. Against the Clippers, Nick Traystman had two hits and stole three bases, Dylan Horn had an RBI double and Mack had three hits.

Potvin tournament (16U)

• Grafton Angevine pitched six strong innings for the win as the CT Hurricanes beat the CT Blue Jays 110 in the title game. Angevine allowed two hits with 14 strikeouts. Brandon Drake had three hits, Jake Plikus singled and doubled and Bowen Baker had two hits for the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes advanced to the final with a 3-1 win over the CT Nationals. Baker had two hits and two RBI and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Pat Bora went six innings for the win, allowing two hits with five strikeouts, and Ryan Dubord pitched the seventh to earn a save. Jared Burrows started for the Nationals and didn't figure in the decision despite allowing one run on three hits over five innings with 10 strikeouts.

• The CT Nationals beat the CT Blue Jays 5-1 as Dan Allard pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. Noah Violette's two-run double in the top of the seventh broke a 1-1 tie. Jared Burrows singled, doubled, scored and drove in two runs and Steve Cantres drove in a run for the Nationals.

Speedbowl

• Keith Rocco picked up his fourth win of the season in the SK Modified division, winning the 35-lap race on Saturday night at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl. It was Rocco's 142nd win in the division. Kyle James was second and Ted Christophe­r finished third.

Saturday's card also featured the first Mr. Rooter Pro Truck Series race since the event merged with the NLWS Trucks. And Joshua Stringer won both races. Duane Noll was second in the NLWS race and third in the Mr. Rooter race, behind Stringer and Frank Dumicich Jr. Todd Taylor finished third in the NLWS race.

Other winners included Chris Meyer (25-lap Limitied Sportsman), Rob Richard (25-lap Pro 4 Modifieds), Andrew Molleur (25-lap SK Modifieds) and Wayne Burroughs (25-lap Mini Stock). Meyer was followed by Al Stone III and Jordan Hadley, Richard was followed by Dan Messervy Sr. and Dan Messervy Jr. and Burroughs was followed by Hadley and Sean Caron. The 14-year-old Molleur finished ahead of Ethan Durocher, also 14. John O'Sullivan was third.
