EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS WARN ABOUT HEIGHT OF HURRICANE SEASON

-

Gov. Dannel Malloy and state emergency management officials are reminding residents that hurricane season is ramping up even as summer is winding down.

While the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, the biggest threat for Connecticut is between mid-August and mid-October.

As part of preparation efforts, officials advise downloading the new CTPrepares mobile app, which is available for free on Apple and Android devices. The app provides information and alerts for emergency situations as well as preparedness tips. Residents also can register for alerts by going to www.ct.gov/ctalert.

Here is a list of recommended items to include in a basic emergency supply kit:

One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation

At least a three-day supply of nonperishable food

Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and an NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both

Flashlight and extra batteries First aid kit A whistle to signal for help Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

A manual can opener for food, if kit contains canned food Local maps Cellphone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

Food and litter requirements for any pets

Medicine or any special need items, including diapers for infants

Emergency management officials also recommend developing a family emergency plan. Families should identify an out-oftown contact to call in the event of an emergency, and make sure every family member knows the phone number and has access to a cellphone or prepaid phone card. Texting also can help get around network disruptions.
