Schooners Mascelli, Jew and Chandler honored by NECBL

Nick Mascelli and Tommy Jew of the Mystic Schooners were named to the all-New England Collegiate Baseball League team as first-team selections.

Mascelli, a third baseman from Wagner, batted .341 in 46 games with 14 doubles, seven homers and 22 RBI. Jew, an outfielder from UC Santa Barbara, batted .331. He had eight homers, 21 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 34 games.

Schooners pitcher Kevin Chandler made the second team. Chandler, also from UC Santa Barbara, was 2-0 in nine games (five starts) with an earned run average of 1.95. He allowed 24 hits with 37 strikeouts and six walks in 37 innings.

Black Wolves sign Brock

• The New England Black Wolves signed veteran transition player David Brock to a two-year deal.

The 6-foot-4 Brock has appeared in 105 games over seven seasons in the National Lacrosse League, collecting 418 loose balls with 24 goals and 30 assists. Brock, 31, spent the last five seasons with the Buffalo Bandits. He had a career-best 80 loose balls last season, and 159 over the past two years. Brock has appeared in 10 playoff games during his career. He had 22 loose balls in four playoff games during the 2016 postseason.

Men's soccer

• UConn was selected as the top team in the American Athletic Conference's preseason coaches' poll. The Huskies earned the honor for the fourth time in the last five seasons, earning 45 points and four first-place votes. Defending AAC champion Tulsa was second with 43 points and one first-place vote. UConn was third in the AAC last season (11-7-1, 3-3-1) and lost in the AAC tournament semifinals.
