Rotonda West, Fla. — Josephine M. DeMatteo, 94, of Rotonda West, and formerly of Newington and Old Lyme, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, in Florida.

Born on Jan. 9, 1923, in Hartford, she was the beloved wife of the late John A. DeMatteo Sr. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as an executive secretary in the banking industry. Josephine loved the White Sands Beach and was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Newington and a member of the Berlin Senior Center. In her leisure time, she enjoyed volunteeri­ng at the New Britain General Hospital, Newington Senior and Disabled Center, Berlin Chamber of Commerce and with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Josephine is survived by her family, John and Irene DeMatteo of Rotonda West, Fla. and Marie and Dean Evans of Crowley, La. Three grandchild­ren and 17 great-grandchild­ren.

Besides her husband, John, she was predecease­d by her grandson, Michael DeMatteo.

Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Newington. Interment will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. Relatives and friends may call on Josephine’s family from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Newington Memorial Funeral Home.
