Norwich — Four officers on Monday night likely saved the life of a man they found sitting in a running car in a garage, according to police.

Police said the officers responded to an unspecified address to investigate the report of a suicidal subject. According to police, the person who reported the incident had received concerning texts from the man about his thoughts and depression.

When officers made their presence known, they got no response, police said. Because of that, they decided to enter the residence, at which point they smelled a strong odor of vehicle exhaust fumes.

Officers made their way to the attached garage, where police said they found the man sitting in a running vehicle.

Because of the actions of the reporting party and the officers, crews quickly were able to transport the man to The William W. Backus Hospital for treatment.

In a news release, Norwich police said residents who are experiencing or witnessing suicidal thoughts can receive help by calling 211 or 911.
