The Day

Jeane Swatzburg

East Lyme — Well let me tell you! I had an amazing time while I was here on Earth. Sadly, there were other plans for me and I had to leave my physical form at Yale New Haven Hospital, at age 73, on Aug. 26, 2017.

It all started on Oct. 20, 1943, when my father and mother, Jeremiah and Eva Andryauskas Haggerty, welcomed me into the world at Backus Hospital in Norwich. I lived in Norwich for most of my life and graduated Norwich Free Academy in 1961. I was very supportive of the school as I continued to be part of the alumni and helped set up class reunions.

I first started my working career at Hartford National Bank in Norwich. Later I would meet Alvin Swatzburg. We were married in Ledyard on June 1, 1974. We worked together in a couple of well known restaurants in Norwich and Montville, Levy’s, Al’s Uptown, and Al’s Food Emporium, where we got to know many people and catered many wonderful events. Unfortunately, we had to leave the restaurant business and I had to take on a few other jobs working at BBP and then L+M Hospital working in the records department. When I finally officially retired I wanted to give back to the community, and I continued to work at Care and Share.

It was not all work for me, I did lead a very active life. I enjoyed traveling with family and friends, even if they were little day trips. Nothing was greater though then working in the garden, or spending a summer day at McCook’s with a great mystery book.

I had met many wonderful people while I was alive and I will surely miss them. Though I will greatly miss my family, whom I will continue to watch over. I have my three cousins, Barbara Zappieri, Leo Chupaska and Ann Weir. While I did not have any children of my own, I certainly treated my two stepdaughters, Susan Mackie of Niantic and Marcie Blaise and husband, Brian Blaise, of Colchester, like my own. They also produced amazing grandchildren, Michael Mackie and wife, Melissa, Danielle Blaise, and Jessica Blaise. As well as great-grandchildren whom I was so blessed and happy to meet for a short time, Madison, Calvin and Elizabeth Mackie.

If you would like to come celebrate my life with my family, you can meet at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St. in Norwich, for a procession to graveside services at 10 a.m. at Hebrew Cemetery No. 3, Middle Road, Preston.
