Fitch announces Class of 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

Groton — Fitch High School has selected 15 people as its fourth class for induction into its Athletic Hall of Fame, athletic director Marc Romano announced Tuesday.

The ceremony will take place on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. at the St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton Long Point. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at the school's main office weekdays between 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Following is a capsule look at Class of 2017:

William Tiede (Class of 1934) — played football, basketball and track and field, earning three letters in track as a sprinter, hurdler and javelin thrower, and was a member of a state championsh­ip reley team.

Betzy Killam (Christense­n) (1935) — played basketball for the Falcons and was the second-leadig scorer as a senior before playing collegiate­ly at Brown. She later spent her entire teaching career at Fitch Junior High School.

Alton "Andy" Andrews (1946) — Three-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball). He was an All-ECC lineman as a senior, the starting catcher in baseball and captain of basketball team as a senior while serving as class president as a junior and senior.

Eugene "Gee Gee" Cedio (1947) — Was a running back and receiver on the football team and played shortstop in baseball. He caught the game-winning touchdown pass to beat Bulkeley of New London in 1945 and was named Fitch's best athlete as a senior.

Robert "Bob" Ross (1950) — Three-sport athlete (basketball, baseball golf). Earned first team ECC honors and third team all-state honors as a senior while leading Fitch to Class B state final at Yale. Went on to play golf in college and later won numerous tournament­s as a profession­al.

Fred Clark, Jr. (1955) — played basketball, football and track & field. Competed in high jump and helped Falcons win ECC and Class M titles as a senior. Was a lineman and end in football and center in basketball, captaining the team as a senior. Served as class president as a junior and senior.

Ed Harvey (1969) — lettered all three years in football, basketball and naseball. Went on to play baseball and Hudson Valley CC and UConn, where he helped Huskies reached College World Series in 1972. Returned to Groton and built baseball team into one of state's elite programs as head coach.

Richard Lowe (1969) — Played football and track & field, starting for three years in football while serving as a captain in 1968 and earning all-area honors. Also captained track team as senior and left with school records in shot put and high jump before continuing his career at UConn.

Donna Sullivan (1978) — lettered all three times each in softball and tennis, captaining both teams her senior year. She was part of a state championsh­ip doubles team in tennis as a senior, was named All-SAC and all-area in softball as a senior and was Fitch's 1978 Female Athlete of the Year.

Kim Murphy (1974) — ran cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Was CDC cross country champion as a senior and placed fifth in the State Open while leading Fitch to State Open title. Still holds school indoor record in the mile and was a two-time CDC and Class L outdoor champion in the two-mile, setting a school record, and was member of state championsh­ip 4x100 relay team.

Scott Khoury (1981) — Three-sport star (football, basketball, baseball). Was team MVP in all three sports as a senior. Rushed for over 1,000 yards in football, earning all-league honors, was also all-league in basketball and was all-league and all-state in baseball. Was Fitch's 1981 Male Athlete of the Year.

Renee (Khoury) Cooper (1983) — Three-sport star (volleyball, basketball, softball). Was first basketball player to surpass 1,000 career points while earning All-SAC honors as junior and senior. Was also All-SAC twice in softball, adding all-state honors as a senior and earning a scholarshi­p to Sacred Heart.

Warren Williams (1990) — Three-sport star (football, indoor track, outdoor track). Was a two-year letter-winner as running back and defense back in football. Still holds school indoor record at 300 meters and set school outdoor record in 200 (22.76), placing third in State Open. Captained both track teams.

Kim Hanlon (Nichols) (1991) — Three-sports star (volleyball, indoor Track, softball). Lettered in indoor track twice and captained softball team as senior. She really excelled in volleyball, captaining team as senior while earning team MVP and all-state honors while leading Falcons to the state finals.

Beth Kosta (2007) — Lettered all four years in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Was a three-time All-ECC and all-state pick and one-time All-New England pick in cross country, winning ECC title in 2005. Was All-ECC twice in indoor track and is current outdoor school record holder in 2,000 steeplecha­se. Was a CIAC Scholar-Athlete and the 2007 Fitch Female Athlete of the Year.

Ben Latham (2008) — An elite track athlete, winning ECC and Class L javelin titles three times and the State Open twice. He was New England javelin champion in 2008 and national runnerup. Was named all-state three times, All-New England twice and was an All-American in 2008, when he was The Day's Track Athlete of the Year and Fitch's Male Athlete of the Year.
