Coast Guard men, women post impressive soccer wins
CGA women roll to victory over Lehman
Gorham, Maine — Luke Telang scored once in each half as the Coast Guard Academy men's soccer team beat Castleton State 4-0 on Saturday in the Husky Fall Classic at Southern Maine.
Gio Ottomanelli had a goal and an assist, Garett McGill scored and Ryan Dandan and Landon Klopfenstein had assists and Oakdale's Jake Sorenson made one save for the Bears (1-1).
Austin Read, MaGill and Telang were selected to the all-tournament team. In other games: • Jeff Farina's goal in the 84th minute helped No. 9 Notre Dame survive a scare from UConn, defeating the Huskies 1-0 before 4,522 at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies (1-2) held a 10-4 edge in shots against the Irish (3-0), but couldn't find the back of the net.
"The toughest thing to do in this game is score goals," UConn coach Ray Reid said. "I'm happy with how we competed tonight, but we have to take better advantage of our opportunities."
Goalie Scott Levene made three saves for UConn.
Women's soccer
• Michelle Hernandez had a goal and an assist as Coast Guard beat Lehman 6-0 in the Cyclones Kickoff Classic at Centenary College.
Freshmen Lauren Murrill, Felicia Lombardi, Addie Severs and Kat Retz had goals along with sophomore Claire Hurley of Waterford.
Olivia Holt and Kali Borden had assists for Coast Guard (11).
College volleyball
• Coast Guard finished 2-2 in the season-opening Red Dragon Classic at Cortland State. After defeating Nazareth 3-1 and Alfred State 3-0 on Friday, the Bears lost to Fredonia 3-1 and Vassar 3-0 on the final day.
In the loss to Fredonia, Angelou Dunton had 14 kills and Bridget Boyle added 12, while Michelle McGill had 11 digs and Makenna Martin added 33 assists.
In the win over Nazareth, Dunton and Alexi Deane had 10 kills apiece, Boyle and McGill had 10 digs apiece and Martin had 32 assists. Against Aldred, Dunton had 18 kills, Mackenzie Everett 12 digs and Martin 34 assists.
