Mystic — John James Clarke Jr., 79, of Mystic passed on Sept. 2, 2017, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London after an extended illness, surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Gloucester, Mass., the only child of John and Myrtle (Leveille) Clarke.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet (Reynolds) Clarke. He also leaves his daughter, Donna (Clarke) Peckham and Gerry of Mystic; his son Christophe­r and Lyn (Ruszyk) of Norwich; five granddaugh­ters, Andrea (Peckham) Simmons of Stonington, Katelyn (Peckham) Thompson of Scituate, R.I., Jordan, Amy, and Chelsea Clarke of Norwich; and two great-grandsons, Gavin Simmons of Stonington and Finn Thompson of Scituate, R.I. He also leaves his beloved dog, Caili. He was predecease­d by his eldest son, John J. Clarke III.

He attended Norwich Technical High School and later served in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was a trained machinist and worked at Whiton Machine Shop and Pfizer. In 1968, he started a general contractin­g business and over the next 20 years built many custom homes in the area.

He and Janet, who had made their home in Gales Ferry, retired to Port Charlotte, Fla., and enjoyed 20 years meeting new friends, going boating and exploring beaches. They eventually returned to Connecticu­t to be close to family, and made their home in Mystic. He loved to boat, fish, and travel. Taking his grandchild­ren to Disney World was a great joy. He enjoyed exploring his family tree and heritage. Above all, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, and Poppy who cherished time spent with family.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. Funeral service and interment will be private.
