Stonington — Two upcoming events have been scheduled to remember Stonington native Josh Piver, who was killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Piver graduated from Stonington High School, where he was the goalie on the soccer team. He went on to graduate from the University of Vermont, where he majored in economics. During the summers he worked aboard the Dodson’s Boatyard launch, ferrying people back and forth from their yachts and sailboats.

Piver was living in Brooklyn and working as a pollution credits trader for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 105th floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center on the day of the attacks. He was 23.

At 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, a memorial service for the victims of Sept. 11 will be held at Stonington Point near the bench dedicated in Piver’s honor.

The granite bench is engraved with the words: “Play music, Walk on the beach, I won’t be far from reach.”

The public is invited to attend the short service. For more information, contact Elaine Smith at eelainesmith@comcast.net or www. stoningtonsrotary.org.

On Sept. 9 and Sept. 16 at Stonington High School, the first Piver Cup soccer tournament will be held featuring boys and girls teams from Stonington, Westerly, Fitch and Chariho.

As they did at a game last year on the 15th anniversary of his death, Stonington boys players will again wear special uniform shirts that have Piver’s name on the back. The plaque near the boys’ soccer field notes that it is named in his honor.

Girls’ games times are 12:30 and 3 p.m. while boys teams will play at 5:30 and 8 p.m.

Since his death, the Josh Piver Memorial Scholarship also has been awarded each year to a Stonington High School senior “who best practices Josh’s values of character and community involvement.”
