Stonington — Warren Heerlein Jr., 65, devoted husband, father and grandfather, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, at his family home in Stonington.

Warren is survived by his wife, Julie; his children, Jason Heerlein, Emily McClenahan and her husband, Benjamin and Maxx Heerlein and his wife, Marissa; his two grandchildren, Jack and Mae McClenahan, a third grandchild soon to arrive; his sisters, Irene Duncan and Karen Diez Canseco and their children, Amy Beth Priess and Jesus Diez Canseco.

He is predeceased by his parents, Warren and Catherine Heerlein.

Warren was born March 10, 1952, in New London and raised in Groton. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor of sciences in mathematics and was a loyal Huskies fan for the rest of his life.

Warren took great pride in his work and career. He co-founded Sunrise Solar Services and installed solar panels on the White House during the Carter Administration, work that was subsequently commemorated at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Most of his professional life was spent working for the U.S. Coast Guard, where he built what was supposed to be a temporary position into a 30-year career as a commanding officer in the research and development center and played a key role in many important federal projects, including the response to the BP oil spill in 2010.

His passion for doing laundry, playing golf and the New York Yankees was only eclipsed by his infinite love for his family as a son, husband, dad and “grumpsey.”

A memorial service will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 30, at his family home, 110 Prentice Williams Road in Stonington. All those who knew Warren are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Red Cross in the aftermath of the Hurricane in Texas are encouraged in his name and in recognition of his work at the Coast Guard.
