In this Sept. 3 column, “Conn College president wants leaders, not ‘snowflakes,’,” Paul Choiniere quoted Conn College President Katherine Bergeron as being committed to robust political and policy debate at her liberal arts college. Not all the readers of theday.com were buying it.

“Another fake gesture for publicity from a college (that) does not serve anyone but itself and certainly not New London and its people!” — Echiburis

“What happened to the days of robust college debates where opposing ideas where debated civilly, quietly and factually in real time and the audience left challenged and pondering after being exposed to a new viewpoint? That is all we ask.” — Wylie

“Dr. Bergeron and the Editorial Staff at The Day: Go beyond the ‘words’ and advocate for a tuition waiver for NLHS graduates that maintain an agreed-upon grade point average. Conn’s payment to the City expires soon. This should be a serious discussion topic with a potential to go beyond a $12,000 payment.” — Bill Morse

“Well said Dr. Bergeron.” — Tatertots

“Understand that Ms. Bergeron’s first priority is to the academic advancement of Connecticut College, not to mention her (role) as Salesperson in Chief of the College to donors and alumni. But a keen understanding of the college’s place in the larger community should be a critical success factor, one that her Board of Trustees should hold her accountable for. There is always a word of caution in such host/institution relationships. New London doesn’t need the College to dominate our communities, but to be an equal partner in the future of the City.” — Live Here

“The liberal culture flows down from the top and from the lectern.” — Ledyard Conservative

“I think social contracts get kids thinking, so if it gets the discussion going and people thinking about listening to those with whom they disagree, then great. I am all for it.” — Dc. Gths
