No. 2 UConn field hockey team rolls past No. 18 Harvard

Cambridge, Mass. — UConn scored three straight goals in the first half to take charge and the No. 2 Huskies went on to defeat No. 18 Harvard 6-2 on Sunday in a matchup of top 20 collegiate field hockey teams.

The Huskies are 5-0, four of those wins coming against top 20 opponents.

Trailing 1-0, goals by Amanda Collins, Barbara van den Hoogen and Charlotte Veitner gave UConn a 3-1 halftime lead. Goalie Nine Klein made six saves for UConn which held a 16-8 edge in shots. In other game: • Molly Freeman's goal late in the first half broke a 1-1 tie and No. 4 Middlebury College went on to defeat Connecticut College 4-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference opener for both. Conn (0-2, 0-1) scored at the 22:27 mark when Enya McGarry redirected a shot from Caroline Ferro into the net.

Women's soccer

• Freshman Kess Elmore scored a pair of goals as UConn played Fordham to a 2-2 draw in New York. Heidi Druehl and Melina Couzis had assists for the Huskies (2-3-2), who outshot the Rams 18-5. Fordham is 2-2-3.

H.S. boys' soccer

• Fitch and Stonington won first round matches on Saturday night to advance to the final of the inaugural Josh River Cup at Stonington. Fitch defeated Westerly 2-1 in overtime, rallying from a 1-0 deficit to tie th game on a goal by Andrew Kerst in the second half (Caleb Robbins assisted) and winning it when Trey Adams set up Calvin Jacey for the game-winner in overtime.

Stonington, meanwhile, cruised to a 3-0 win over Chariho (R.I.), taking a 1-0 lead in the first half when Graham Johnstone converted a long throw-in from Cam Whalen. In the second half, Jamison Magowan made it 2-0 with 11 minutes left and Ty Fidrych added a third goal for the Bears (2-0) off an assist from Rhys Hammond.

Men's soccer

• Freshman Austin DaSilva scored his first career goal as UConn played No. 18 Georgetown to a 1-1 overtime draw on Saturday night before 4,000 at Morrone Stadium. DaSilva scored in the 14th minute for the Huskies (12-1) before the Hoyas (4-0-1) tied it on penalty kick with eight minutes left in the first half. Both teams had eight shots and UConn goalie Scott Levene made two saves.

Men's cross country

• Conn College freshman Ethan Milsark finished 14th (17.29) at Saturday's Trinity Invitational at Wickham Park in Manchester. Marshall Lieder (41st, 18:11) also cracked the top 50 for the Camels, who did not compete in the team race.

Women's cross country

• Conn College placed fourth in the Trinity Invite at Wickham Park in Manchester on Saturday. Freshman Meredith Cronin finished 13th (21:24) to lead the Camels while Hannah Noyes was 15th (21:32), Eva Brydson was 16th (21:34), Elizabeth Hensley was 31st (22:30) and Caitlin Teare was 33rd (22:40).

Men's tennis

• Conn College's doubles team of Ethan Hecker-Zak Danz won the C Bracket at the Stonehill Doubles Invitational on Saturday, defeating Nick Lisichenok-Joey Conrod of the host school 8-5 in the title match. In addition, Patrick Farrell-Henry Decoster lost in the final of the B Bracket.

Men's water polo

• Conn College was swept by No. 7 MIT on Saturday, 19-11 and 20-5. Dylan Pinckert, Jake Smith and Jake Pescatore each scored twice in the opener while Stephen Cress scored twice in the second game for the Camels (0-2).
