DOT: NO BRIDGE OPENINGS MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY ON ROUTE 156 SPAN NORTH STONINGTON WILL HOLD HEARING ON JOINING LEDGE LIGHT HEALTH DISTRICT

The state Department of Transporta­tion said it is starting work to replace and upgrade the bridge controls for the movable bridge on Route 156 over the Niantic River in East Lyme and Waterford.

To facilitate the work, there will be no bridge openings from Monday, Sept. 11, through Thursday, Sept. 14, according to DOT.

DOT said in a news release that the “existing 25-year old bridge control system needed replacemen­t, due to its antiquated condition, recent failure and the inability to locate and procure replacemen­t parts.”

The new control system will incorporat­e an auxiliary drive backup system and the traffic gates will also be replaced to facilitate a future comprehens­ive project, DOT said.

The project is scheduled to be completed Nov. 30.

DOT said the contractor may have traffic lane restrictio­ns on Route 156 eastbound and westbound,

North Stonington — The town will hold a public hearing Tuesday on potentiall­y joining Ledge Light Health District.

Ledge Light Health Director Stephen Mansfield will lead a presentati­on during the Board of Selectmen’s meeting at 7 p.m. in the New Town Hall Meeting room.

The town, which has a parttime municipal health district, is considerin­g joining the regional health agency. According to a Connecticu­t Local Health Annual Report from 2016, the town has a part-time director and part-time sanitarian. The town’s budget last year for its heath district, including salaries and operating expenses, was $32,751.

A town meeting on the topic has been scheduled for Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. at North Stonington Elementary School in the multipurpo­se room.
