• The annual Whale Cup women’s soccer game between Coast Guard Academy and Connecticu­t College will take place on Wednesday afternoon (4:30) at Connecticu­t College. Conn College has dominated the series, winning 15 of 16 meetings. Coast Guard’s only win came in 2010. The Camels (4-0-1) are off to a fast start. Senior Michelle Medina is the leading scorer with three goals and one assist. The Camels have allowed just three goals in five games. Freshman Kat Retz leads the Bears (3-2) in points with five on two goals and an assist. Santana (New London). • Underclass­men have helped spark the Coast Guard volleyball team off to a 7-3 overall start. Sophomore Angelou Dunton leads the team in kills (101) and aces (17)and ranks second with 92 digs while freshman Bridget Boyle is second in kills (99) and third in digs (74). • Montville graduate Jake Sorenson has allowed just three goals in four starts for the men’s soccer team. He owns a 0.77 goals against average and one shutout for the Bears (3-2, 0-1). • Freshmen Kyle Fager and Chris Lansing each posted a singles win and combined for a win at No. 3 doubles in the men’s tennis team’s 6-2 win over Division II Assumption on Monday. Mariners riding a wave

• Mitchell College sophomore David Still of New London earned his second career New England Collegiate Conference men’s cross country runner of the week honor after winning the Mitchell Invitation­al on Saturday in a 5K course record time of 17 minutes, 14 seconds. • The men’s soccer team is still searching for its first win of the season. The Mariners (0-3-1) have suffered some tough losses, dropping two one-goal games. Junior Andrew Storton has a team-high two goals.

Camel highlights

• Conn College junior Scott Mason, a transfer from Lehigh, received the New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s cross country performer of the week honor. Mason took fourth out of 315 runners at the UMass Dartmouth Invitation­al, finishing the 8,000 meter race in 25:30. The Camels placed fourth overall.

• Junior Aly Clarke, Fitch High School graduate, has never been a big goal scorer during her college soccer career, scoring once in her first 28 career games. But she has found a scoring touch, racking up four goals in the last four games for Eastern Connecticu­t State University. Clarke, who played at Southern Connecticu­t before transferri­ng, has two game-winning goals this fall, including an overtime strike that allowed the Warriors to beat Castleton 2-1 on Sunday. It was her second goal of the game. She was an all-state pick at Fitch. For her efforts, Clarke was named Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors. She has a team-high five goals. • Western Connecticu­t running back Kyle McKinnon, a senior from New London, rushed for two touchdowns and 34 yards in a 37-29 win over Plymouth State on Saturday. He also caught one pass for nine yards before leaving the game with an undisclose­d injury. He’s listed as a starter on the depth chart for next week’s game. • St. Michael’s College freshman Ellen Arvidson, a St. Bernard graduate, finished 21st in 22:02, helping her team take second at Middlebury College’s Aldrich Invitation­al on Saturday. • East Lyme’s Eric Stirtan is a contributo­r on special teams for the Curry College football team. A senior, he’s returned two kickoffs for 26 yards and appeared in three games. He also has four tackles for undefeated Curry (3-0). • Ledyard High School graduate Geralson Withrow is a freshman member of the Newbury College men’s cross country team. He placed second overall in the Mitchell College Invitation­al, crossing the finish line at 17:20, and was named NECC Rookie of the Week. • Mackenzie Northcutt, a freshman from East Lyme, has appeared in two games for the Marist College women’s soccer team. She played her club soccer at Southeast Soccer Club. • Former Ledyard cross country standout Megan Brawner is running for Central Connecticu­t. She placed 44th overall in 19:34 at the UMass Minutemen Cross Country Invitation­al on Sept. 9. She was the second finisher on her team. • East Lyme graduate Hannah Belleville, a freshman defender, is gradually earning playing time for the Maine women’s soccer team. She saw a career-best 45 minutes of action in a 1-0 loss to Cornell on Saturday.
