Quaker Hill — Mariea D. Spencer, 96, of Mohegan Avenue Parkway, Quaker Hill, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at the Hebrew Home in West Hartford.

She was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Henry L. and Katherine Caspers Doherty. She was married May 25, 1944, in Montville, to the late Willard D. Spencer, who died in 1988.

She graduated from the Norwich Free Academy in 1939. She had worked at the former Norwich Savings Society, the Bank of America in Santa Monica, Calif., before moving to Quaker Hill in 1955.

Mariea was a justice of the peace, charter member of the Waterford Historical Society, a member and past president of the Waterford Republican Women’s Club, served on the former Waterford Visiting Nurse Board, member of the Waterford Republican Town Committee, the Slater Museum at NFA, the Mystic Art Associatio­n, Lyman Allyn Museum, Charter Member of the New London Maritime Society, Life Member of the Auxiliary to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, the Mystic Seaport, Friends of Fort Trumbull, Military Officers Associatio­n of America Auxiliary, Friends of Harkness, the Connecticu­t College Arboretum, the Nautilus Museum, the West Farms Land Trust, and had formerly served on the Waterford Zoning Board of Appeals.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Quaker Hill. Burial is private and there are no calling hours.
