Voluntown — Joseph Allen Jolin of Voluntown passed away unexpected­ly on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.

He was born on Sept. 20, 1949, in Norwich, son of the late Ernest and Jennie Ann (Nowosielsk­i) Jolin. On July 24, 1982, he was married to Sylvia (Kirsipuu) Jolin; she survives him.

He is also survived by their daughter, Justine Leffert and husband, Jason, of Westerly; brother, Ernest Jolin Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Texas; uncles and aunts, Albert and Hilda Jolin and Richard and Jean Osga, all of Voluntown; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predecease­d by his sister, Theresa Jolin Yarnell.

Joe graduated from Griswold High School in 1967. He was a volunteer fireman and EMT in Voluntown for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy submarine service during the Vietnam War. Joe worked as an automobile adjuster for over 40 years, and he retired from Geico Insurance in 2015. He was an accomplish­ed guitarist his entire life, having played in local bands. Later in life, he enjoyed performing independen­tly at weddings and recorded several CDs. Music and NASCAR were his passions.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, at the Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home, 490 Voluntown Road, Jewett City. A graveside service with military honors will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2017 at Robbins Cemetery in Voluntown.
