Enter into a world of faerie magic Lady Gaga: Five Foot Two

- Mary Biekert — Mary Biekert

The Florence Griswold Museum's annual outdoor wee faerie village exhibition is returning this Saturday. But what is a Wee Faerie village, you might ask? The word Faerie is an alternative spelling to the more commonly known word Fairy. With that in mind, you can imagine what a fairy town might entail. If you guessed miniature versions of a bakery, library and flower shop, you would be on the right path.

Running until Oct. 29, visitors to the museum can check out the faerie hamlet simply by walking around the museum grounds where the 30 hand-crafted faerie scenes are situated over the 13-acre Florence Griswold property. Each scene has been created by artists, designers and “faerie-aficionados,” most of which took as long as six months to construct. A perfect exhibition for all ages to enjoy.

“Faerieville USA: In and Around a Wee Faerie Town,” opens Saturday and runs until Oct. 29; Florence Griswold Museum, 96 Lyme St., Old Lyme; Tues.-Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun 1-5 p.m.; museum admission is $15 adults, $14 for seniors, $13 for students, $5 for members, free for ages 12 and under; (860) 434-5542.

“Lady Gaga: Five Foot Two,” a documentary about, you guessed it, Lady Gaga, was just released on Netflix Friday. The 1-hour 40-minute film artfully chronicles the life of Gaga over the course of 2016 — both as a self-assured woman who has full control over her music and public image and a woman battling many beasts. Harrowing scenes of her screaming into a pillow as she combats the chronic pain that she deals with on a constant basis after injuring her hip in 2013 are juxtaposed with her continuing to perform with conviction and passion, not letting anything, ranging from said pain to heartbreak, get in her way. And even though we might be left to wonder if the film is somehow an extended advertisement for the pop star, the question is overshadowed by the intrigue that Gaga cultivates, even after shedding the façade of masks and bizarre costumes from years past.
