When Katrina Landry, who is from Griswold, was at the airport in Las Vegas on Sunday night and it shut down, she said she at first didn’t know exactly what was happening.

Landry, who moved to Las Vegas three months ago to become a poker dealer at the Bellagio, was awaiting a flight back to Connecticut to visit her family and friends.

She said she heard that there was a shooting and people had knocked down or jumped over the airport fence and were on the runway.

As she looked into the situation, she realized how serious it was.

Fifty-nine people were killed and 527 people were injured during a shooting at a Jason Aldean concert, the Associated Press reported.

Landry, 21, immediately called her parents back home, where it was 2 or 3 a.m., and told them she was trying to figure out what was happening and would keep them posted. She then started calling friends and family.

Landry’s flight was delayed by two hours, but she had a three-and-a-half hour layover, so she was still able to make her connecting flight.

She said the experience was nerve-wracking, especially as someone from a small town. While she was on layover, she saw news report after news report, and she found it unsettling to see that it was happening in her new home.

She also saw that she had 27 text messages from people checking on her when she got off her first flight, which “was really humbling that people cared that much and wanted to make sure I was OK.”

She said she is sending her thoughts and prayers to everyone back home in Las Vegas and she is grateful that her friends there are safe.

Landry said she is lucky that her layover allowed her to still make her connecting flight back to Connecticut, where she took her nieces apple and pumpkin picking on Monday.

When Landry saw her mom in person, her mom “bawled her eyes out” and told her that she had been so scared.

Landry said she knew under different circumstances that it could have been her at the concert:

“If I had known about the concert — I love country music — I probably would have gone,” she said.
