Ledyard, Wheeler boys post impressive wins

Ledyard — Nick Bailey's goal with only two minutes remaining in the first half snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted Ledyard to a 3-1 nonconfere­nce boys' soccer victory over Old Lyme on Monday afternoon.

Brandon Donovan assisted on the game winner for the Colonels (5-3) while Trevor Hutchins added a pair of unassisted goals, one in the 17th minute and the other in the 56th.

Matt Cushman, assisted by Quinn Romeo, scored for the Wildcats (0-5-2), who were outshot 23-16.

Ledyard goalie Ken Turner made five saves and Old Lyme keeper Ryan Tetreault made 10. In other games: • Scott Pion scored 4:44 into the second overtime to give Wheeler a 2-1, come-from-behind win over Tourtellot­te in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division III game. Ryan Condon scored, Bowen Baker had four saves, and Pion had an assist for the Lions (2-7, 2-5).

Girls

• Mya Johnson scored three goals as Old Lyme, the No. 1 team in the Class M/S state poll, remained unbeaten with a 5-0 nonleague win over Ledyard, Maddie Ouellette added a goal and an assist for the Wildcats (9-0), Keelin Hurtt scored a goal, Danielle McCarthy had two assists and Emily Rivera made seven saves for the shutout. Delaney Gagnon made 14 saves for Ledyard (4-6).

• Maddie Lynch scored four goals as Fitch cruised to a 5-1 victory over St. Bernard. Maddie Catlett also scored for the Falcons (4-5-1) while Emily Smith scored the lone goal for the Saints (4-3) and goalie Briana Beverly made eight saves.

• Sophia Murphy, Bria Fielding, Desiree Johnson scored for New London in its 3-0 win over Grasso Tech. Kellie McGill, Christelle Attis and Stefani McGuire all had an assist for the Whalers (2-6) and Jaelynn Potter had six saves.

• Courtney Viglione had two goals as Morgan topped East Lyme 3-1. Karlie Rowe scored, Alivia Catanzaro had an assist and Hayley Sorrentino had nine saves for the Vikings (5-5-1), who have lost three straight.

• Maya Lalumiere had two goals as Plainfield beat Stonington, 4-1. Megan Detwiler scored, Alex Jefson had an assist, and Hannah Lamb and Tori LoPresto combined for five saves for the Bears (19-1).

Ridgefield, which moved into the poll at No. 10 last week, received six more points than it had last week but was leapfrogge­d by the Rams. Go figure. It might be a short return for Cheshire, though, as it has a doozy of a game this week against unbeaten West Haven. vs. West Haven, Friday, 7 p.m.
