Groton — Felipe Castro Sr., age 91, passed away at his home in Groton surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017.

He was born in Tarlac, Philippine Islands to Isidore and Maria (Gumangan) Castro. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945, was a World War II veteran, served on active duty during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and retired from the submarine force as a senior chief petty officer.

Felipe was a past president of the New London Filipino-American Club. He was the co-owner of the Esquire Barber Shop in Uncasville for several years, and then retired from General Dynamics Electric Boat as a senior engineerin­g technical writer. He was an excellent sportsman, winning awards at the All-Navy Bowling Championsh­ips and as Subase New London Golf Club Men’s Champion. He was also an accomplish­ed artist and musician.

Besides his parents, Felipe was predecease­d by his four brothers, Fidel, Segundino, Mauricio and Marcial; his sister, Isabel; and his daughterin-law, Wilda.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Irene (Neto); sons, Felipe (Wilda) and Kim (Cynthia); daughter, Pamela Castro Pascoe (David); grandchild­ren, Tonya Castro Little (John), Crystal Castro, Kyle Castro (Amanda), Colby Castro (Jessica), Leah Moriarty and Connor Moriarty; great-grandchild­ren, Alexandra Little-Rushford (Ken), Marcial Little, Jack Little, Sadie Castro, Lucy Castro, Ari Castro and Aryana Serna; great-great-grandchild­ren, Kaylee Kemler and Evan Rushford; and many nieces and nephews in both the United States and the Philippine­s.
