NFA boys nip Fitch 29-30 for 60th straight cross country win

Groton — Reno Sebastian finished third overall Tuesday and the Norwich Free Academy boys' cross country team won its 60th straight dual meet by edging Fitch 29-30 in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division I meet at Haley Farm.

Nate Lieske (fifth), Christian Dubreuil (sixth), Aidan Brown (seventh) and Digby Ludlow (eighth) helped the Wildcats (6-0, 3-0).

Tom Readett won the 5,000-meter race in 17:36 for Fitch (0-3, 0-3) and Ian Poe finished second. In other meets:

• Sam Lenes finished second overall and Waterford defeated Woodstock Academy 19-43 in ECC Division II. The Lancers also defeated Windham 15-49 and Plainfield 20-43. Joe Carano and Eric Zane also finished in the top five for Waterford (8-2, 3-1).

• Sam Davis won the race in 19:20 and St. Bernard defeated Griswold 24-31 in ECC Division III. Graham McCauley and Jack Zachem finished in the top five for St. Bernard (1-3, 1-3).

• Wheeler split an ECC Division III tri-meet in Thompson, defeating host Tourtellot­te 22-33 while losing to Lyman Memorial 15-50, which took the top six places. Michael Carroll paced the Lions (5-4, 4-1) by finishing seventh overall in 18:027 over the 3-mile course while Ethan Smith finished ninth in 18:30.

• New London split a home trimeet, defeating Killingly 22-33 while losing to Bacon Academy 18-38. The Whalers (2-8) were led by John Mateo, who placed fourth overall in 18:06.

Girls

• Christina McCaffrey won the 3.1-mile race in 23:07 and St. Bernard defeated Griswold 15-50 in ECC Division III. Brigid Kunka, Rachel Kunka, Serena Britner and Payton McCauley finished in the top five for the Saints (4-0, 4-0).

• Catie Shannon finished first overall in 17:04 and NFA defeated Fitch 19-44 in ECC Division I. Emma Grace Ricketts, Eve Buckridge and Sydney Kupis finished in the top five for NFA (6-0, 3-0). Julia Adrian was second overall for the Falcons (0-3, 0-3).

• Brittney Riggins finished fourth overall and Wheeler lost to Tourtellot­te (19-36) and Lyman Memorial (15-50) in ECC Division III. The Lions are 2-7, 1-4.

• Waterford went 2-1 at Woodstock, losing to the Centaurs 18-43 in an ECC Division II meet while defeating Plainfield and Windham by 15-50 scores. Catherine Saucier finished third overall for the Lancers (4-6, 0-4) and Rayne Rivera placed seventh.

• New London lost to Bacon 15-50 in a nonleague meet as Yasmin Aguilar placed 11th overall for the Whalers (0-9).
