Readers of theday.com reacted to Sports Columnist Mike DiMauro’s Oct. 5 commentary that contended a sign deployed by Lyme-Old Lyme High School students at a recent soccer game — “Our Defense is a Wall” — was clearly aimed at Hispanic players on the opposing team, a racist act of intimidation.

“Tremendous Mike, and now we'll hear from those who deny there is racism around us.” —Tom Donnee

“The kids that did this were not born this way. Racism is an acquired behavior.” —Reid Burdick

“Just when I thought it could not get any worse it does. What is next; no more signs at any event because we may offend someone? Grow up and get over yourselves. Stop looking for something that does not exist. So the signs of a D and # representing defense at a majority of football games should be removed too? We are now creating another generation of snowflakes. One was enough.” —Keith J. Robbins

“Wake up folks this is nothing new. As one of the only Jewish kids growing up in East Lyme I dealt with all these same bigots.” —Informed Comment

“Sticks and Stones versus the 1st Amendment? Think about what you are asking for.” —Longtime Mystic resident

“Unless there is more information to the fact that there was some intended racism here I think this is just a sign saying their defense is a wall, a sign you will find at about 10,000 sporting events across the nation. Seriously, I've seen this sign hundreds of times.” —Bglenney

“Man, what a dumb article. Maybe they should have hung a sign that said, ‘Our Defense Is Tolerant And Inclusive?’" —Rich Lather

“Why's everyone in such a hurry to pretend that this isn't racism?” —Justin0741
