U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, was appointed to serve on a committee of lawmakers who will work on a final version of the 2018 defense policy bill.

The Senate and House have both passed their own versions of the bill, which sets spending limits and guidelines for the Department of Defense, and now differences between those two bills must be reconciled.

Courtney said in a statement that he would continue to seek bipartisan support for Connecticut priorities, such as submarine construction, and “ensure that our region is well placed in the final bill.”

Norwich — The Young Voters Society at Norwich Free Academy and the Norwich NAACP branch Robertsine Duncan Youth Council will host three political forums in the coming weeks featuring Norwich mayoral, City Council and school board candidates.

On Tuesday, the five mayoral candidates will take questions from NFA students in a forum running from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at Slater Auditorium. This event is not open to the public because it will take place during a school day. The forum will be recorded and broadcast on the NFA-TV Channel 12 Education Access on Norwich Comcast Cable system and on Frontier Communications Channel 99.

A City Council candidate debate will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Ensemble Room of the Sidney Frank Center, and a Board of Education debate will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Community Room at Kelly Middle School.

The two evening debates are open to the public.
