UCONN, PROVIDENCE TO PLAY EXHIBITION AT MOHEGAN

- — Day Staff Reports

UConn and Providence will renew their New England men's basketball rivalry by playing an exhibition game on Oct. 25 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. Proceeds from the event, set to tip off at 7 p.m., will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The NCAA grants a waiver to schools for an extra exhibition game if ticket sales are donated to hurricane relief.

It will be the first meeting between the two former Big East Conference foes since March, 2013 when UConn posted a 63-59 overtime win at Gampel Pavilion in the regular-season finale. The Huskies hold a 44-28 edge in the overall series.

"I am happy that we have this opportunity to help some of the victims that have suffered so much from the devastating effects of the hurricanes that hit last month," Providence College coach Ed Cooley said in a released statement. "As soon as I reached out to (UConn coach) Kevin (Ollie), he was excited to play the game and have his program be involved in this event.

"We hope that the great fan bases from both schools will come together to support this cause."

Tickets can be purchased at the Mohegan Sun ticket office or through TicketMaster.com. Cost is $50 for courtside, $25 for lower bowl and $10 for upper bowl seating.

UConn has two other exhibition games — Oct. 30 against Merrimack in Hartford and Nov. 5 against Queens College in Storrs — on the schedule.
