New London — Laura Mary (Lawson) Jordan, 99, died peacefully at her home in New London on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017.

She was born on April 20, 1918, in Providence, R.I., daughter of John Alfred and Mary (Ward) Lawson. Laura came to New London in 1923 when her father was transferre­d here with the New York & New Haven Railroad. She attended St Mary’s Parochial School and graduated from Williams Memorial Institute in 1935. She married the late Charles G. Jordan of New London, on April 11, 1942, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in New London.

She was extremely active in both her parish and the local community, serving in leadership roles in numerous organizati­ons. Laura served as vice president of the Jennings School PTO, president of the Catholic Guild for the Blind, treasurer of the St. Joseph’s Cub Scouts, captain of the New London Chapter of American Red Cross Motor Corps, secretary of the St. Bernard’s Guild, secretary for the Legion of Mary, and as an alumna of the New London Business College, she taught shorthand and typing there during the 1950s. Laura was especially proud to have served as president of the Business and Profession­al Women’s Club which championed women to enter and succeed in the business environmen­t with confidence. From 1961 to 1986, she was clerk of the Superior Court for Juvenile Matters in Montville.

Laura is survived by her sons, Charles G. Jordan Jr., major USAF retired of Goodview, Va., John J. Jordan and daughter-inlaw, Maureen, of New London; niece, Barbara S. Cedio and husband, Anthony, of Uncasville; and longtime family friend, Priscilla Bogel.

Besides her husband, Laura was predecease­d by her son, Ward F.X. Jordan; and a sister, Barbara Lawson Dupont.

Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. The funeral procession will assemble at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in Mary Star of the Sea Church, 10 Huntington St., New London. Burial will follow at St Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the St Joseph’s School Endowment Fund, 17 Squire St., New London, CT 06320.
