Mariners win a showdown in the NECC
New London — Andrew Storton, Norwich's David Hernandez and New London's Zavier Veliz scored as Mitchell College beat Lesley 3-2 on Wednesday in a men's soccer game for first place in the New England Collegiate Conference.
Mitchell (6-8-1) began the day tied for first place in the league at 4-1 with Lesley, Dean College and Elms College. Dean and Elms also won on Wednesday, leaving three teams tied at 5-1.
Yianni Longinidis of Waterford and New London's Wadlet Jean-Baptiste and Brayan Mora had assists for Mitchell. In other games: • Adam Cowie-Haskell scored in the 86th minute to lift Wesleyan to a 2-1 win over Connecticut College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Ben Manoogian of Conn had tied the game at 1-1 four minutes before Cowie-Haskell's goal. Matt Butera had an assist and A.J. Marcucci had two saves for Conn (9-2-4, 4-2-4).
College volleyball
• Lauren Tompkins had 33 assists and 10 digs as Mitchell picked up its second win of the season, beating Newbury 25-19, 25-27, 25-11, 25-23 in a NECC match.
Italia Krick had eight kills, six aces and 10 digs, Myia Williams had 10 kills and Waterford's Megan Elphick had 11 kills and five aces for Mitchell (2-16, 2-4).
• Coast Guard lost to Endicott in a nonleague match, 3-1. Freshman Bridget Boyle had 19 kills and 10 digs, Michelle McGill had 14 digs and Makenna Martin had 32 assists and 13 digs for Coast Guard (16-12).
College women's soccer
• Kat Retz, Michelle Hernandez and Waterford's Claire Hurley scored as Coast Guard set a program record for wins at nine, beating Albertus Magnus 3-0 in a nonleague game. Valerie Hines and Emily Conner had assists for the Bears (9-8).
• Jacquelyn White scored 9:43 into overtime as Mitchell College beat Wheelock 2-1 in an NECC game.
Tiana Edwards assisted on White's goal, Lindsey Fairbank scored an unassisted goal in the first half and Jordan Lohneiss made four saves for Mitchell (2-10-1).
College field hockey
• Connecticut College lost to Wesleyan in a NESCAC game, 4-3. Jamie Navoni had a goal and an assist and Jacqueline Murphy and Meghan Lembo scored goals for Conn (5-10, 1-9).
Tigers announce schedule
• The Connecticut Tigers released their 2018 schedule. The New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers opens the season on Friday, June 15 against the Lowell Spinners at 7:05 p.m. The Spinners are league's affiliate for the Boston Red Sox. The Tigers will be playing at Dodd Stadium in Norwich for the ninth straight season.
