Coast Guard volleyball season ends with loss to Wellesley in NEWMAC quarters

Wellesley, Mass. — Freshman Lauren Gedney had a match-high 15 kills as third-seeded Wellesley defeated No. 6 Coast Guard Academy 3-0 in the quarterfin­als of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference volleyball tournament on Tuesday night.

Game scores were 25-23, 25-19, 2519.

The Bears, making their 20th consecutiv­e appearance in the NEWMAC tourney, finish 16-14, their ninth straight winning season. Wellesley (21-5) will play No. 2 Babson at MIT in aturday's semifinals.

Sophomore Angelou Dunton led Coast Guard with 12 kills and eight digs while sophomore Makenna Martin had a team-high 14 assists and senior Michelle McGill added 11 digs in the final match of her career.

The game marked the final game for three seniors who won 71 matches in their four years.

McGill finished third all-time at Coast Guard with 1,564 digs, Madison Scott is eighth all-time with 283 blocks and Emma Saunders finished with 552 kills. In another game: • Mitchell College's season came to an end with a 3-0 loss to third-seeded Becker College in the New England Collegiate Conference first round. Game scores were 26-24, 25-20 and 25-20.

The sixth-seeded Mariners finish 2-18. Lauren Tompkins had 20 assists and nine digs for Mitchell while Marissa Sweeney added 13 digs, four aces and five kills, and Megan Elphick had 14 digs and eight kills.

H.S. girls' soccer

• Top-seeded Old Lyme's semifinal game against No. 4 Cromwell in the Shoreline Conference tournament was postponed as the town continues to recover from widespread power outages.

The unbeaten Wildcats (16-0), the reigning Shoreline and Class S state champions, will now host the Panthers (11-2-4) today at 3 p.m. The championsh­ip game will be played at either 5 of 7 p.m. on Friday at Portland High School.

• No. 2 Norwich Tech's quarterfin­al game against No. 7 Ellis Tech in the Connecticu­t Technical School Conference tournament was postponed for the second straight day due to power outages and will be played at 4 p.m. today at Norwich Tech.
