‘RICH FLAVOR, POOR TASTE’ SHOWCASED AT THE HYGIENIC
Hygienic Art Galleries is hosting "Rich Flavor, Poor Taste: Reloaded" through Nov. 19 at its New London venue.
Artists often respond to social, cultural, and political concerns through direct or indirect acknowledgment. "Rich Flavor, Poor Taste: Reloaded" attempts to blur the lines between low and high culture in the gallery setting. These artists seek out and celebrate their similarities while exhibiting their work side by side.
This second installment of "Rich Flavor, Poor Taste" will feature artworks from Ricky Bardy, David Cuatlacuatl, Charlie Cunningham, Paige Heimark, Roberto Lugo, Yelizaveta Masalimova, and Tim Wengertsman.
The exhibition is dedicated to artist David Cuatlacuatl, the co-curator of the original "Rich Flavor, Poor Taste" with artist and friend Charlie Cunningham. The duo exhibition was a culmination of their graduate thesis work at Pennsylvania State University in 2015. On Aug. 3 of this year, Cuatlacuatl died in an auto accident in Napoleon Township, Ohio.
Cuatlacuatl was born in Mexico, grew up in Indiana, and studied art at Ball State University and Pennsylvania State University. His dedicated love of his hometown in Mexico led him to become co-director of the international Rasquache Artist Residency in Puebla, Mexico, with his brother and artist Frederico Cuatlacuatl in 2016.
The Hygienic at 79 Bank St., New London, is open 2-7 p.m. Tues.-Fri., 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sat., and noon-4 p.m. Sun. Admission is free. Call (860) 443-8001.
