Gray, relays lift East Lyme to fourth in Class M
New Haven — Taylor Gray finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 9.36 seconds to help lift the East Lyme High School girls' swim team to a fourth-place team finish Wednesday night in the Class M state championship at Southern Connecticut State University.
Lauralton Hall won the team title with 600 points, followed by North Haven (464), Brookfield (445) and East Lyme (395). Old Lyme/Valley Regional was 15th with 140 points and Fitch was 16th with 110.
East Lyme also got a third-place finish from the 200 freestyle relay team of Mary Kathryn Taylor, Maeve Counter, Kate Orefice and Grace Vlaun (1:42.12) and a fourth from the 400 free relay team featuring the same four swimmers (3:43.20).
Also placing for the Vikings were Taylor, fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.20) and seventh in the 50 free (25.74); Vlaun, seventh in the 200 free (2:02.32); Gray eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:18.32); and Katie Keating, eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.53).
Old Lyme/Valley Regional freshman Connie Pan was sixth in the 50 free (25.71) and seventh in the 100 free (56.09).
H.S. girls' soccer
• Top-seeded Old Lyme's Class S state championship game against No. 2 Holy Cross is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Middletown High School. Old Lyme (20-1) is vying for its third straight state championship.
Women's basketball
• Coast Guard opened its season with a 70-59 loss to UMass Boston. Freshman Brenna Farrington scored 14 points, Micaela Martinelli had 11 points and five rebounds and Zoe Riis-Fallica had 10 points and three assists for Coast Guard.
• Mitchell College lost to Albertus Magnus in its season opener 71-41. Jordan Lohneiss came off the bench to score eight points and Francesca Pinard and Ariana Carter had seven rebounds each for Mitchell.
Men's basketball
• Adam Hess scored 22 points to lead St. Thomas More to a 98-72 win over Rise Academy. Jair Currie had 16 points, Alex Maticuic scored 14 and Everette Hammond had 10 points for the Chancellors (2-0).
• Coast Guard opened its season with an 83-76 loss to Roger Williams. Micah Baldez and Packy Witkowski scored 15 points each, Noah Baldez had 14 points and Justin Kane had nine rebounds for Coast Guard.
College football
• Coast Guard Academy sophomore defensive back Patrick Crowley was named a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference second team all-star. Crowley started all 10 games at cornerback for the Bears and was second on the team with 67 tackles and led the way with 49 solo tackles and two interceptions.
Coast Guard senior wide receiver Cody Bain was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team in what was the league's inaugural season.
Springfield College fullback Jordan Wilcox was named Offensive Player of the Year and teammate Nick Giorgio, a lineman, was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Men's swimming
• Coast Guard debuted at No. 21 in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) monthly poll. The Bears are off to a 3-0 start with wins over Springfield, Wheaton and WPI to begin the year. Coast Guard was not ranked in the CSCAA preseason poll. NEWMAC foe MIT is ranked fourth nationally while Tufts (11th), Williams (12th), Amherst (16th) and WPI (23rd) were also ranked nationally from the New England region.
