Waterford — Virginia (Menghi) Hogan, 85, of Waterford, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

She was born in New London, Nov. 22, 1931, the daughter of Albert and Lilli Koko Menghi. She was the widow of John Hogan, who died Oct. 6, 2017. She graduated from Chapman Technical High School, where she served as a drum major, and then Connecticut College with a bachelor’s degree in language and certification to teach Spanish. While attending college, she worked summers at Ocean Beach Park selling ice cream. It was there that she met John B. Hogan “Jack,” a lifeguard, who was attending Boston University. Jack and Ginny were married on June 22, 1953. Together, they had four children, and ran a series of businesses in Simsbury, including Personnel Search Associates and Hogan Real Estate. Eventually, they moved back to the New London area to build their dream home in Waterford, where they enjoyed many years of sunsets on Niantic Bay.

Listing all of Ginny’s accomplishments and salutations would not truly honor her. She met everyone with a smile and a cheerful “hello!” whether it was your first meeting or thousandth. She had genuine interest and compassion for everyone she came across and this is what makes her loss the hardest. Please honor Ginny by showing a true compassion and interest in everyone in your life. She was a dedicated mother to all her children and cared for her autistic daughter for 62 years up until the day she passed.

Ginny is survived by two sons, Timothy D. Hogan and Daniel J. Hogan, and his wife, Diane (Korbelak) Hogan; granddaughter, Kathryn “Katie” Hogan; daughters, Eileen Hogan and Sharon Hogan and her husband, Carlos Castells; grandchildren, Sy Castells, Ian Hogan and his wife, Vivian Hogan; and great-granddaughter, Juniper Lily Hogan.

As her many friends and family are mourning her loss, we can find solace in the fact she truly touched us and changed our lives for the better, which is her true legacy.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Camp Harkness Fund.

A memorial service is being planned for Virginia and Jack for the spring.

The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home of Niantic is assisting the family.
