CIAC sets schedule for Saturday's state football title games
Cheshire — Top-seeded Killingly will play No. 6 Barlow for the Class M state football championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, the governing body for high school athletics in the state, announced Monday morning the sites for all four of Saturday's state championship games.
The Redmen (12-0) will try to become the first Eastern Connecticut Conference school to win a state football title since 2008, when New London defeated Seymour 27-18 in the Class SS final.
Killingly is making its third straight postseason appearance, but first in a state final since 1996 when the Redmen beat New Canaan 27-13 for the Class M title. Killingly also won a state title in 1981, beat Hand 14-7 in the Class M-II final.
Barlow (9-3) is making its appearance in the final. The Falcons have won six straight since starting the season 3-3.
The other three state finals will be played at 11 a.m. In Class LL, No. 1 Greenwich will play No. 3 Darien at Boyle Stadium in Stamford, while the Class L final between No. 2 Hand and No. 5 Masuk will be played at Willow Brook Park and the Class S final between No. 1 Ansonia and No. 2 St. Joseph will be played at West Haven High School.
In other high school football news:
• The Thames River Crusaders had three players named to the Connecticut Technical Conference all-star team: senior Trey Stimson, junior Albert Velasquez and sophomore Roark Ryan.
Women's basketball
• Seniors Jill Bray and Gillian Gerton scored 17 points apiece as Coast Guard Academy routed Fisher College 94-62 in Lynn, Mass. The Bears (3-3) made a season-high 15 3-pointers, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc (15 of 30). Bray accounted for five 3-pointers and Gerton made three. Gerton also had 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Micaela Martinelli added 15 points and seven rebounds for Coast Guard while Johanna Mooelnaar had 11 points and Zoe Riis-Fallica six assists.
• Senior Mairead Hynes scored 28 points as Connecticut College won its sixth straight game with a 74-63 win over Trinity College in Hartford. The Camels (6-1) shot a blistering 94.7 from the free throw line with Hynes going 10-for-10. Casey Walsh added 19 points for the Camels, including five 3-pointers, while Kyle Caouette had 12 points seven points, five assists and five steals and Margaret Corcoran had nine points and nine rebounds.
• Cedar Crest hold off Mitchell College for a 53-49 win in New London. Marissa Sweeney had 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Mariners (1-5) while Ashleigh Beauford added 12 points and seven rebounds and Kate McCormack had nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.
