New London — Mary Astor, 98, recently of Niantic, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, at Crescent Point in Niantic.

Mary was born in the small town of Tamaqua, Pa., in 1919, to Charles and Bertha Nitchun. She would have turned 99 on Jan. 13. Her family moved to Brooklyn and she spent many years living in Hewlett, Long Island and Manhattan. Mary was a graduate of Hunter College and received her master’s in library science from C.W. Post, after which she served as librarian in the Hewlett School district for many years. She married Bernard Astor in 1943 and they were married for 59 years until his death in 2002. She moved to Connecticu­t in 2012 and was at Crescent Point Assisted Living in Niantic for the past three years.

Mary was predecease­d by her loving daughter, Hedi; and by her sisters, Dorothy and Rebecca; her brother, Sydney; and their spouses.

She is survived by her sons, Michael and Carl and their wives, Susan and Sharon; her son-in-law, Carl; seven grandchild­ren and eight great-grandchild­ren; and by her sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Albert Vorspan.

Donations may be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.

Her family will be observing shiva on Monday in New London at 12 Billard Road, where there will be a service at 8 p.m.
