East Lyme boys beat defending Class M champion Brookfield

East Lyme — East Lyme opened its season with a bang on Saturday.

Dev Ostrowski scored 26 points, including two big 3-pointers and a thunderous dunk that gave the Vikings the lead for good with just under three minutes remaining, as East Lyme defeated defending Class M champion Brookfield 66-57 on opening day of the high school boys' basketball season.

Brookfield, which trailed 20-7 after one quarter, had fought back to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter before Ostrowski, the junior all-state product, worked his magic and willed East Lyme to the win.

Luke Leonard also scored 26 points for the Vikings. Both players made four 3-pointers. In other games: • Norwich Free Academy pulled away in the third quarter for a 7245 victory over Classical (R.I.). The Wildcats, who led 33-22 at the break, outscored Classical 23-10 in the third to take a 56-32 lead into the fourth quarter. Aidan Miller led NFA with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, while Bret Wood added 11 and Maloyid Perkins scored 10.

• Scott Pion scored 20 points as Wheeler opened with a 60-45 nonconfere­nce win over Ellis Tech. Bowen Baker added nine rebounds and five assists for the Lions while Ian Spracklin had nine rebounds and Ryan Condon six assists.

• Conner Davis scored 29 points as Plainfield defeated Montville 6940. It was the 500th career victory for Plainfield coach Bob Arremony. Gennaro Davis led the Indians with 16 points.

• Sophomore Aedan Using led Old Lyme with 23 points and the Wildcats defeated Old Saybrook 53-45 in the Shoreline Conference. Brady Sheffield added nine points for Old Lyme.

• Parish Hill rolled to a 58-27 nonconfere­nce win over Norwich Tech. Maison McBane scored eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to led the Warriros while Brandon Mayersohn added seven.

Girls

• Kameryn King scored 14 points as Mercy pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 45-33 win over NFA. Mercy, which held a slim 29-26 lead after three quarters, outscored the Wildcats 16-7 in the final eight minutes. Makayla Poirier-Vaughters scored 17 points for NFA (0-2), including an 11for-12 effort from the foul line.

• Audrey Gavin scored 14 points and Old Lyme outscored Old Saybrook 33-13 in the second half to rout the Rams 58-28 in the Shoreline Conference. Jordan Lewis added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats (2-0, 2-0) and Emma McCulloch added 11 points.
