Coast Guard men come out firing and roll past Mitchell

Bears shoot 55.1 percent from floor and have six players in double figures

New London — Six players scored in double figures as Coast Guard Academy rolled to a 105-87 men's basketball victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon.

Bryce Schroeder scored a career high 20 points for the Bears (6-1) while Justin Kane had his fourth straight double-double (17 points, 15 rebounds), Micha Baldez added 17 points, Noah Baldez 16, Sean Gratock 14 and J.T. Cox 12.

Hasani Williams led Mitchell (3-6) with 20 points while Alan Morgan made 4 of 6 3-pointers and finished with 18 points, Mack Bertram-Gregory had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Colizel Lewis had 10 points.

Coast Guard shot a season-high 55.1 percent from the floor and took control with a 10-0 run in the second quarter that stretched its lead to 20, 55-35, and the lead never got below double figures the rest of the afternoon. In other games: • New London's Tyler Martinez capped off a big game with a basket at the buzzer to give Avery Point an 87-86 win over Roxbury Community College in an NJCAA Region 21 game. Martinez had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Elijah Malboeuf-Boyd had 15 points and 11 rebounds, Nick Fersch scored 18 and Ledyard's Steve Fletcher had 16 points and seven assists for the Pointers (4-7, 4-7).

Women's basketball

• Senior Gillian Gerton scored a career-high 22 points as Coast Guard beat Johnson & Wales 70-53 in a nonleague game. Micaela Martinelli had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Jill Bray had nine points and three steals, Gerton had seven rebounds and Breanna Wood came off the bench for 10 points and five rebounds for the Bears (4-4).

• Former New London standout Charee Osborne scored 19 points as Roxbury Community College took over sole possession of first place in NJCAA Region 21 with a 72-65 win over Avery Point.

Edona Thaqi and Waterford's Mia Brennan scored 15 points each, Taty LaFrance Boyce had 12 points and nine rebounds, Taleeha Green had 10 points and eight rebounds and Brennan had five steals for the Pointers (9-4, 5-1).

H.S. wrestling

• Montville went 3-0 during a quad-meet at Coventry, defeating Norwich Free Academy 63-16, Conard 63-15 and the host Patriots 66-6. NFA won its other two matches, defeating Coventry 63-12 and Conard 46-21.

Noah Caskey (138 pounds), Sam Kury (152) and Nick Tibbetts (220) each went 3-0 with three pins for the Indians (3-1) while Quinn Bond (113), Mick Wynosky (126), Ian Anderson (145), Dane Concascia (182) and Derrick Deveau (285) all went 3-0.

For NFA (2-2), Dominic Renfree (120) and Marc Thelusma (1895) each went 3-0.

• New London had a pair of champions en route to a fourth-place finish in the Lancer Invitation­al at Waterford High School.

Jacob Commander (195 pounds) pinned Kevin Brocksom of Law in 5 minutes, 51 seconds in his championsh­ip match while Noah Kimball (220) pinned Sebby Lombardo of Southingto­n in 38 seconds to win his title.

The Whalers had 121 points, trailing champion Southingto­n (217), Killingly (165.5) and Lyman Memorial/ Windham Tech (144). Host Waterford was fifth with 112.

Waterford's Luther Wade also won a title at 160, pinning Southingto­n's Tim Budnik in 40 seconds. New London's Naaji Powell-Keaton (106) lost in final to Killingly's Dan Charron 7-6, while teammate Xavier Alvarez (182) finished third, as did the Lancers' Joe Morgan (113) and Eric Zane (120).

• Joey Millbach (113) and Richard Mullaney (285) won individual titles as Ledyard finished in fourth place at the Guilford Invitation­al.

J'Mari Lowman (106), Dennis Charles (152) and Adam Crawford(160) added runnerup finishes for the Colonels while Cole Dirico (132) finished third and Brayden Grim (132) and Jadian MacKenzie (22) each placed fourth.

H.S field hockey

• Stonington's Abby Flakus (midfield) and Trinity Lennon (forward) and Waterford's Cassidy Susi (forward) were named to the Class S allstate first team recently.

Earning second team honors among local athletes were East Lyme's Katie Durkee and Fitch/Ledyard's Zoe Pearse and Erin Ritter in Class M and Waterford's Alyson Sanford in Class S.

H.S. hockey

• The Eastern Connecticu­t Eagles opened their season with a 3-1 win over Bolton/Coventry/Rockville. Quentin Dean's goal late in the second period snapped a 1-1 tie and Evan Tower iced the win with an empty-net goal in the third period.

Rylin Fowler made 23 saves, Kevin Close scored the first goal and Jake Verbridge, Will Cannella, Ryan Huta and Tower had assists for the Eagles.

H.S. boys' fencing

• New London swept the foil competitio­n during a tri-meet against Waterford and Ledyard, beating the Lancers 5-4 and the Colonels 6-3. Ledyard defeated Waterford 7-2. In the epee competitio­n, Ledyard defeated Waterford 8-1 while New London did not compete.

H.S. girls' fencing

• Waterford swept the foil competitio­n during a tri-meet against New London and Ledyard. The Lancers defeated the Whalers 8-1 and Colonels 6-3 while Ledyard beat New London 7-2. Waterford's Georgie Martin had a plus-24 point indicator, the highest score of the day. Waterford defeated Ledyard 6-3 in epee and New London did not compete.
