Old Lyme boys improve to 2-0 with win over Hale-Ray

Doll leads the way for Wildcats with 16 points and 10 rebounds

Old Lyme — Ray Doll finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the Old Lyme High School boys' basketball team's 71-58 victory over Hale-Ray on Monday, making the Wildcats 2-0.

Aedan Using had 22 points and Brady Sheffield 16 points for Old Lyme. In other games: • Mikey Buscetto scored 36 points, including four 3-pointers, as Waterford opened its season with a 91-58 nonconfere­nce win over McMahon of Norwalk. Buscetto also had six steals and four assists for the Lancers, who led 49-22 at halftime, while Liam Spellman had 14 points and eight rebounds, Walker Sutman added eight rebounds, Eric Pinch six assists and Omar Rahman six assists.

• Putnam opened its season with a 62-35 victory over Wheeler. Wheeler (1-1) was led by Clay Carini with 12 points.

Girls' basketball

• Wheeler outscored Norwich Tech 27-12 in the second half to pull away for a 41-24 nonleague win. Molly Butremovic had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead Wheeler (11) while Emma Morgan added nine points and eight rebounds and Savannah Galluci had 11 rebounds. Geovanna Taitague scored 11 points for Norwich Tech (0-2) and Ashely Williams added 10.

• Waterford held Windham scoreless in the first quarter on the way to an easy 53-27 win over the Whippets. Olivia Pacheco led Waterford (2-0) with 11 points and Marilyn Childs added 10.

• Kylie Schlottman scored 22 points as East Haven built a 17-point halftime lead and cruised to a 59-42 win over East Lyme. East Lyme (1-2) was led by Megan Bauman's 17 points, while Sophie Dubreuil added 15, including a pair of 3-pointers.

• Lexi Ocasio scored 17 points to lead Sheehan to a 7024 victory over Fitch. Ciarra Jimemez had a team-best five points for Fitch (0-2).

College wrestling

• Coast Guard Academy opened the dual portion of its schedule by going 2-1 at the Washington & Lee Duals in Lexington, Va., including a 17-15 win over No. 24 Olivet. The Bears also beat King's College 39-9 while losing to Ohio Northern 19-18 on a criteria (Ohio Northern won more individual matches 6-4).

In the loss to Ohio Northern, heavyweigh­t Patrick Irvin pulled Coast Guard into an 18-18 tie by winning the final match 4-2. Owen McClave (125) and Jonathan Wagner (184) earned pins for the Bears while Chris Sullivan (157) earned a 1-0 decision.

In the win over Olivet, CGA trailed 15-11 with two matches left when Kayne Roberts (197) earned a 6-3 decision and Irvin pulled out a 2-1 win to rally the Bears. Christian Gosch (157), Nick Remke (165) and Jessup Pawelczyk (184) had pins for the Bears against King's while A.J. Aeberli (174) won by technical fall.

Women's basketball

• New London High School graduate India Pagan, a freshman at Stony Brook, was named the America East Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week for her performanc­e in a pair of Seawolves victories last week.

Pagan, a 6-foot-1 forward, was 9-for-11 shooting in the two games. She was 4-for5 shooting in a 63-46 win over Iona on Dec. 14, then finished with 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds in Sunday's 60-55 victory over Central Connecticu­t State.

Pagan has started all 11 games for Stony Brook, averaging 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Last season she was a Class LL all-state selection at New London and The Day's All-Area Player of the Year.
