Mystic — Agnes (Olsen) Maloney, 74, of Mystic, passed away at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, after a long illness on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on April 30, 1943, in New London, the daughter of Joshua and Josephine (O’Connell) Olsen. Agnes was educated in Groton schools and graduated from Fitch Senior High School in 1961. During her long secretarial career, in which she excelled, she worked for General Dynamics, Electric Boat in Groton, the Bureau of Business Practice in Waterford, the Mystic Congregational Church, and finally Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, from which she retired in 2010.

Agnes was talented at needlework and enjoyed crewel embroidery, dressmaking, crochet, and quilting throughout the years, and took pride in her exacting craftsmanship. Her genealogical research led to ancestors and distant cousins in Norway, Denmark, and Ireland. She also loved cats and could always be persuaded to take in a stray or two.

Agnes leaves her devoted husband of 38 years, Jim Maloney, who nursed her tirelessly in her last months; her two children, David Burrell of Columbia, Conn., and Diana Burrell Lawton (Scott) of Bedford, Mass., were two of her greatest joys in life; followed by her beloved grandson, Oliver Lawton, on whom she doted. She also leaves her ex-husband, John Burrell of Columbia; and her sister-inlaw, Jean Stewart of Reading, Mass.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. Burial is private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the CT Humane Society, 169 Old Colchester Road, Quaker Hill, CT 06375.
