Robert Gilot

Norwich — Robert “Jake” Richard Gilot departed this earthly realm on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017, to join his Lord and Savior in Heaven where he was also reunited with his beloved Peggy.

Fondly known as “Uncle Big Bob” and “Pops,” he was born on Oct. 17, 1936, in Norwich, the second son of Joseph and Evelyn (Benoit) Gilot. He attended Windham Technical School, graduating in 1954 and started working at Electric Boat in Groton. He married his one true love, Margaret “Peggy” Gilot, who predeceased him in July of 2016.

He is survived by his children, Robert Jr. (Debra) of Lisbon and Susan of Hanover.

After getting married, he left Electric Boat to work at Gold Star Trucking to pursue his passion of being a diesel mechanic. Before he retired, he was the head of maintenance at the Ramada Inn of Norwich.

He was a communicant of many different Catholic parishes over the years and had a deep faith in God.

Road trips and camping were two of his greatest pleasures he enjoyed with his family, and many laughs and adventures were had all over New England, Pennsylvania and New York. He was an avid NASCAR fan and many Saturday nights and weekends were spent at the track with his son. He also enjoyed watching UConn women’s basketball and the occasional Yankee game.

Along with Peggy, he was a great lover of their dogs. There was never a time that there was not a dog in their home. He will be greatly missed by the newest addition to the family, his boy Sullivan.

There are no calling hours and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at St. Joseph’s Church in Occum, meeting directly at the church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Please join the family in the church hall directly after Mass to celebrate a life full of joy and happiness.
