Masons Island

- BY MELINDA ELLIOTT CARLISLE

Masons Island is located in the town of Stonington, where the Mystic River merges with Fishers Island Sound. Just six miles farther out, the Sound merges with the Atlantic. Watch Hill, Rhode Island, lies just to the east. The location truly offers a “yachtman’s paradise,” and also provides some of the best fishing along the New England coast.

A 1914 sales brochure described the island as having “stretches of rugged new England coast,” “great grey boulders and ledges,” “lovely quiet inlets and beaches,” “green ocean waters, clear and clean as crystal,” “groves of ancient trees,” and “hillside grasses rippling in the cool, salty winds of the Atlantic.”

Masons Island is the getaway you have dreamed of: picturesque, unspoiled, and preserved for the recreation and enjoy-ment of those who love nature and wish to dwell comfortably and conveniently amid beautiful surroundings.

For years, this veritable paradise of the coast was known only to a select few. Artists came from many parts of the world to paint its beauties, while fishermen found its waters to be bountiful. The island was also home to generations of the Mason family, who lived on the island and zealously guarded it against any change until the deaths of John and Andrew, the hermit brothers, the last of the Masons.

In the early 1900s, several hundred acres of the shore front were purchased from the Mason brothers’ estate by Gurdon S. Allyn and W. Ellery Allyn, the third generation of Allyns to be identified with Masons Island. Since then, the Allyn family have been stewards of this special place. A causeway connects the approximately 600-acre island to the mainland. There is a 47-acre nature preserve in the middle of the island, which includes a gorgeous salt marsh surrounded by woods. A large fresh water pond in the center of the island was used in the early years for harvesting ice. As legend has it, Money Point Road was so named because Captain Kidd buried his treasure on the southwest point, which was part of an artists’ colony in the 1900s.

Today, Masons Island is a lovely year-round community. A gated community at the south end includes approximately 195 homes. There are also a limited number building lots available for purchase at this time: •An extraordinary 1.27-acre lot on the point faces the Great Marsh, with views out to the Mystic River and Fishers Island Sound.
