LOCAL COLLEGE NOTES

• Rhode Island College’s a junior from Waterford, placed second in the 100-yard breaststro­ke in one minute, 29.71 seconds, and third in the 50 butterfly (40.71) and 200 individual medley (3:16.04) in a women’s swimming meet against Western Connecticu­t. She also swam a leg on the second place 200 medley relay. • UConn senior was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women’s basketball after averaging 18 points and shooting 60 percent from the field in three wins for the top-ranked Huskies. • Former New London all-state forward scored in double figures for the third time this season in Stony Brook’s 80-57 win over Vermont on Jan. 13. Pagan, a freshman, finished with 10 points and two rebounds in 22 minutes. She is averaging 5.5 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 58 percent from the field. • Ledyard graduate scored a season-high nine points off the bench for Western Connecticu­t in a recent loss to Keene State. Grant, who’s appeared in 16 games, is averaging 3.1 points and 1.8 rebounds. • Brandeis University guard a sophomore from New London, scored in double figures 10 straight games before his run was recently broken. Sawyer is averaging 9.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in 16 appearance­s, including five starts. • Central Connecticu­t State sophomore a former Ledyard star, took third place in the 800-meter race at the Joe Donahue Invitation­al Friday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. She posted a time of 2:22.44. In the men’s competitio­n, Fitch graduate ran on the third place 4x400 relay team for the Blue Devils. The senior also placed ninth in the 200 in 22.95 seconds. • Senior of East Lyme helped the Northeaste­rn swimming and diving team beat CCSU on Saturday by placing third in the 3-meter dive. • Waterford graduate is a reserve guard for the Eastern Connecticu­t State men’s basketball team. A junior, Craig has appeared in 16 games, averaging 3.4 points and 2.3 rebounds for the Warriors (15-2 overall, 7-0 Little East).

• The Coast Guard Academy men’s track team 4x400 relay foursome of and

crossed the finish line in the eighth fastest time in Division III at the Sorlein Memorial Invitation­al Saturday at the University of Rhode Island. The quartet finished second in three minutes, 25.89 seconds. The women’s track team put up some impressive numbers at the Sorlien Invitation­al Memorial. Senior set a school record in the weight throw with a toss of 51 feet, 2.25 inches. Freshman ran the second fastest time in school history in the three kilometer, winning the event in 10:13.09. • Sophomore turned in a fine performanc­e in No. 23 Connecticu­t College’s swimming meet against No. 15 Amherst on Saturday. Erb won the 100 breaststro­ke (1:06.25) and 200 breaststro­ke (2:24.34) while also swimming a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team. The Cames lost 167-127. • It’s been a good year for Connecticu­t College hockey. The two programs are a combined 13-5-2 in New England Small College Athletic Conference action. The Camel men (7-9, 6-4) are locked in a three-way tie for second while women (11-3-3, 7-1-2) reside in third. Junior helped the Conn women go 2-0-1 last week, chipping in an assist in a 3-2 win at Castleton State and scoring the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over Williams. Sophomore

sparked the men’s team last week with two goals and an assist in a 3-2 overtime win over Wesleyan and set up both goals in a loss to Trinity. He’s the team’s leading scorer with seven goals and seven assists. • Junior was named the NESCAC performer of the week for men’s squash after capturing the ninth position in a 5-4 win over Wesleyan.

• A season-high four-game winning streak has propelled the Mitchell College women’s basketball team into third place in the New England Collegiate Conference. Mitchell has received vital contributi­ons from several players, including senior (12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds per game) and junior (11.2 points and 11 rebounds during the unbeaten run). Freshman

also has played well as of late, scoring 33 points in the last two games after chipping in 35 in the previous five. The Mariners (8-9, 7-2) are on pace to record double-digit victories in league play for the fifth straight season. They host first-place Newbury College on Saturday. • It’s a tight men’s basketball race in the NECC. Two straight losses last week to league co-leaders Southern Vermont and Lesley, both 5-1, dropped Mitchell into a tie for second place with Becker at 4-2. Mitchell hosts Becker on Wednesday. The Mariners have played two high-scoring extra time games this season, beating Salve Regina, 121-118, in two overtimes on Dec. 12 and losing at Lesley, 111-100, in one overtime on Saturday.
