Biddeford, Maine — Elizabeth “Liz” Ann Metcalf of Biddeford, Maine, passed peacefully Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at the age of 77. She was born Feb. 5, 1940, in Lubec, Maine, to Byard Winslow Metcalf and Rowena M. Mulholland.

Liz lived her childhood years on Peaks Island and later had to commute via the ferry to Cathedral High in Portland. She joined the U.S. Navy in 1958, after graduating high school, which was a very proud moment for her.

After marriage and the birth of her first born, Liz worked as a bartender in New London for nearly 20 years, bartending at various establishm­ents such as The Sub Café, Ernie’s Café and the Brass Rail. Shortly after the birth of her last baby, Liz began working as a cab driver for Harry’s Taxi in New London until her retirement. She thoroughly enjoyed the life lessons, experience­s and friendship­s she encountere­d along the way.

Liz is survived by five children, Anna Porter of Canterbury, Lisa Downing of New London, Denee Downing of Dublin, Ohio, Ray Downing Jr. of Clinton, and Stephen Metcalf of Manchester, N.H. She is also survived by eight grandchild­ren, six great-grandchild­ren, four siblings, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she will be greeted in heaven by two grandchild­ren, Danny DesJardins and Shamaia Hill.

Elizabeth’s positive attitude, friendly personalit­y and bright smile will be missed by many and will live on in the hearts of her family.

Funeral services will be private. Memorial contributi­ons may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
